Archaeology Visit

049

047

On Friday the 24th of January Jerry came to visit and gave us a presentation on his work as an archaeologist. He told us about the discoveries on the 57km Gort to Tuam road. Their biggest find was Owenbristy cemetery where they found 80 shallow graves. He also talked about some the artefacts they found. Among the more interesting ones were a slug knife, wrist guard and some arrowheads which were 4000 years old. He talked about some other sites too which included the Souterrain, a lime kiln and a clachan dwelling in Moyvilla. The lime kiln was used to burn lime to make lime mortar to build a castle. It was very interesting. The clachan was very old. It was from pre-famine times.  Jerry talked to us about some history. We found out that in the early medieval times (around 600-1000 ad) there were no towns in most of Ireland and quite violent cattle raids in the countryside. It was a very interesting morning and we would like to thank Jerry for coming into our classroom.

Write A Book

Write a book Fifth class

The Write-A-Book project is something our school participates in every year. It is a competition for Galway children who would like to become real authors. Each pupil in the school writes their very own book. You can write about anything you like and it can be as long as you desire. The deadline for having our 1st draft finished is the 14th of February 2014. One child in each class wins in every school. You can also receive a ‘Highly Commended’ prize. The Awards Ceremony will be held in June at a hotel in Galway.

Let’s get writing!!

Teacher for a day

Teacher for a day

In December we had a ‘Teacher for a day’. It was a great success! Everybody did a marvellous job! Some of the presentations that really stood out include Ben’s on amazing Dubai, Oísin’s on the architect Frank Gehry, Hannah’s on the wonderful Renzo Piano who was also an architect. We also had John’s PowerPoint on the great spotted woodpecker and last but not least we had Aoibhe’s PowerPoint on the colourful coral reefs. There were lots more really amazing presentations! Well Done to Ms. Leech’s Senior Classes!

January Posts

January posts

In the Middle Room, we have been very busy. We had a student teacher called Meave Quinn working with us from January 7th-20th of January. She taught two subjects each day, after observing our teacher for 2 days. We learned all about Time, body percussion, an Aimsir and making weather forecasts in Geography. Her supervisor loved her Geography lesson so much that she came back and filmed us! It was great fun and we wish Ms. Quinn good luck in the rest of her course.

We also had a special visit from Sarah and Nicole, who have moved from our school to Australia two years ago. It was wonderful to hear about their new life, their school and all the fun sports they can do in the sun over there. They enjoyed meeting their friends and spent a day in our classrooms catching up. We will stay in contact with them by e-mail and Skype.

We have started our Write-A-Book project. We have thought of ideas, presented a plan and signed contracts with our editor (Ms. Fenlon). We are working to a deadline…first draft finished by February break! We are writing books about everything from Dinosaurs, to buildings in Galway, to Time travel and our trips to London. We can’t wait to be published authors!

We read a novel called ‘A Calf Called Valentine’ by Berlie Doherty. It was about a little girl called Anna who comes to live on her grandparents’ farm when her Mum is injured in a train crash. She is very lonely until she makes friends with a new-born Charolais calf called Valentine. We had fun with Reader’s Theatre, making pastel pictures, a review, diaries and letters from the characters.

Our Second Class are continuing preparation for their Holy Communion with a special Mass which was celebrated on Sunday 26th January…E mma, Grace, Diarmuid and Patrick played special roles in this Mass. We look forward to our next mass in February…

We are working very hard in First Class this month. We are learning about Money and change in Maths, Clothes from the Olden Times and different countries in History and Geography, and all this while planning, writing and editing our Write-a-Book projects. Sadhbh and Tara are writing about dogs, Eimear about different animals, Katie is writing about cartoon characters, Clodagh is telling a story of her day at the beach and Erin, about her life in America. We will have them ready next month for your entertainment. Thanks for all your help with them, we’re very proud to be published authors.

County Hurling Final
The boys were in a county hurling final against Kiltormer on the 9th of June. They played very well and came within two points of the other team but unfortunately, it was not to be our year. The team and subs were presented with medals for their great efforts and achievement. We’re proud of you boys, well done.

Clarinbridge Hurling Champions

The Clarinbridge Hurling Champions came toschool today with the county and All Ireland Cups, it was fantastic to see Alan Kerins, Liam Donoghue and Barry Daly with the cups, we were very proud. They all spoke about how great hurling was for developing a persons character. Alan said it makes a person learn patience, respect and honour. We took some photos outside after. Congratulations again lads, the Bridge Boys are indeed back!!!
