GLASNEVIN CEMETERY

GLASNEVIN CEMETERY

On The 11th of December 2018, 6th Class from 4 local schools including Kiltiernan, travelled to Dublin to visit Glasnevin Cemetery, where some of the most famous people from Irish history are buried. We arrived in Dublin and headed to Glasnevin Cemetery. When we got there, we were given tour guides and there were one tour guide between two schools. We visited some iconic graves and also saw where people’s cremated remains are kept. Our tour guide Grainne told us a story about how she had a family member buried there and had only found out recently. We went inside the tomb of Daniel O’Connell and saw his coffin. I touched his coffin for good luck. After that we saw many more graves including Charles Stuart Parnell who fought for Irish Home Rule, Countess Markievicz, who as our tour guide said, wasn’t really a countess at all – her husband just decided to put ‘Count’ in his name! We saw Michael Collins’s grave and I got a picture at his grave. I really enjoyed the experience of Glasnevin I would recommend it to anyone who is would like to learn about history.

Many thanks to Fr. Roche for bringing my class on a tour of Glasnevin and the Dáil.
