Middle Room Blog Term 2

January

Term 2 opened with a bang with our yearly Write a Book project. Every child in school developed their ideas, wrote and published a book and we are very proud of the end results. It’s great too swap with other schools and see the interests and learn facts from children in other places. Thanks to all the great teachers and parents for their assistance, it’s a wonderful way for children to see their own work published and kept throughout the years.

February

In February, Aoife Lynskey the PE teacher in Gort Community School came and designed a programme to raise our fitness levels and have fun at the same time! She conducted a beep test with all students from 3rd class up and with help from Ms. O Doherty, we followed a programme doing laps of the pitch, exercises and circuits to raise the heart levels so our fitness levels could improve. It was a great experience and we loved being active and fit. We even got a training day in CPR and learned how to give chest compressions and call for help if we needed to. Thanks Aoife, it was more than educational.

One of the most memorable experiences we had was performing our school Pantomime in February. We learned songs, practiced lines and actions for weeks and finally got to show all the parents what we had worked towards. ‘Bill’s New Frock’ was one of our favourite memories from school so far and we will never forget it, especially our dancing along with Gabriel in his pink frilly dress to ‘Man, I Feel Like a Woman’……… Great times!

March

Ms. Forde led us in getting a STEM award for our school. We learned all about pulleys and levers and life cycles. 1st and 2nd classes worked together with Junior and Senior Infants to create wells, build tall structures and plan life cycles among other things. Third class worked with the senior classes and Ms. Leech to plan and design many things including the safest way to carry an egg from being dropped from a height!!It was eggciting, eggstrodionary and eggstremely great fun so thanks to all, you’re all cracking! We also had a trip to Atlantaquarium which was very exciting, educational and not to mention fun! Noel Murphy worked with 3rd- 6th  classes to teach coding so we look forward to developing these skills further in the future.

Our annual Book Week was as successful as ever this year. We had our visit to Oranmore library which was as always, one of the highlights of the week! Author and storyteller Rab Fullton gave a storytelling workshop in each room and we learned all sorts about Scottish giants and fairies. He was very funny and we loved his accent! Thanks to the wonderful parents for supporting our book fair, we raised lots of money to restock our libraries.

Bhí Seachtain na Gaeilge againn agus rinneamar iarracht maith chun Gaeilge a labhairt ar an gclós. Bhí Tráth na gCeist ar an Aoine agus bhí an spóirt againn.

Term Three in the Middle Room Kiltiernan NS

April

Term three is always busy and this one is no exception. We continued to work on STEM projects with Ms. Forde and received the great news that we have been successful in receiving our STEM award for 2019. Congratulations to all involved.

May

First to Sixth Classes have been participating in swimming lessons in Kilcornan. We love attending these lessons, are learning loads and the bus home is always a bit quieter because we are so tired!

Testing has taken place with Reading, Spellings and Maths all being tested and we are working hard academically. We look forward to seeing our results in the school reports which will be posted in June.

Congratulations to Jack, Mary, Ella, Emma, Conor, Ultan, Nathan and Daniel who made their First Holy Communion on the 18th of May. We saw serious style on the day and had a lovely party afterwards in the hall in Labane thanks to the First Class parents from both schools. We felt very special and want to thank our parents and teachers for all the hard work and for spoiling us that weekend!

 June

The middle and senior rooms will be visiting Blake Manor Nursing Home on Thursday the 13th of June to recognise Nursing Home Week. We have a lovely repertoire of songs old and new to sing and hope that the residents join in in the sing song!

We are going on our school tour on the 18th of June. First Class are joining with the Infant room to have a fun day out in Turoe Pet Farm where we will feed animals (and feed ourselves!!), play outdoors and have a go on the biggest indoor bouncy castle in Europe! Fun! 2nd to 6th classes will go to Castlebar where we will tour the Museum of Country Life and see what life was like long ago. Afterwards, we are going to a brand new swimming pool in Castlebar for a splash around! Later, we will have a game of bowling and laser quest before heading for home. We’ll surely be sleeping on the bus home after!

Athletics will take place in Dangan on the 19th of June and those who qualified from trials in school will mingle with other schools and try to bring home a win!

Graduation ceremony for 6th class will be on at 6.30pm on the 20th so we will sing our hearts out to send them safely off to First Year.

Our school Sport’s Day is planned for June 21st weather permitting. Ice Cream Day for Down Syndrome will take place that day to cool us down!

School’s out for summer on the 26th of June where we hope the sun shines for long days of fun, exercise and helping out at home! Have a wonderful holiday and see you all in September!
