Our Christmas Fair

Our Christmas Fair

Our Christmas Fair was held on the 9th of December 2018. There were lots of preparations for the fair weeks beforehand. Before the fair officially opened, our choir walked down to the church and we sang a few carols to encourage everyone at Mass to follow us back to the hall. The fair had many stalls including baking, slime and books and there was an area where you could do some art with the help of Orla, who had been coming to after-school for a few weeks to give art lessons. The fair also contained a kids area where you could make a donation and get your face painted, you could get your nails painted and there was also a sweet shop. There was also a Christmas fair raffle which took place by the stage of the hall. There were also guessing games such as how many sweets are in the jar. Overall, the Christmas Fair did extremely well this year. We raised a total of €11,887 for our school. Our raffle netted €5,295 and our Christmas Fair on the day netted €6,592. The Christmas Fair was a great success and it was lots of fun to help out with the 6th Class Baking Stall.

History Trip with Tom O’Doherty

History Trip with Tom O’Doherty

On October 12th 2018, classes from Kiltiernan NS hopped on a bus with local history expert Tom O’Doherty to visit and learn about a few local history sights including the Mausoleum (Caher Cré) and Kilmacduagh Tower just outside Gort and Coole Park.

First, we visited the Mausoleum in Ardrahan. I was very excited as I had never actually visited the Mausoleum. Mr. O’Doherty told us that the Mausoleum was built to house the remains of John Charles Robert Bingham who died in 1876. His wife and brother were also buried here, and all were removed in 1945 for reburial in Ardrahan Church. Unfortunately you can’t actually see where the Bingham’s are now buried in Labane Church. Tom told us that the coffins were placed in metal “boxes” so no air could get in meaning that if you opened the coffin now all the bodies would look the same as they did the day they died.

We then jumped back on the bus to visit the Round Toweer at Kilmacduagh, 5km south of Gort town. On the way to Kilmacduagh Tom told us about St Colman’s Well where St Colman is said to be baptised.

After we arrived in Kilmacduagh most of us went straight to the round tower which is over 32 metres tall. Tom O’Doherty told us that according to legend, Saint Colman MacDuagh was walking through the woods of the Burren when his girdle fell to the ground. Taking this as a sign, he built his monastery on that spot. It is also said no man will ever die from lightning in the Diocese of Kilmacduagh. After we saw the monks round tower, we walked over to St Colman’s grave which is enclosed by yew trees. Yew trees also surround the wall at the Mausoleum, Tom said this is because the berries on the yew trees are full of deadly poison.

On the way back we stopped at Coole Park for a short visit to the famous Autograph Tree and Lady Gregory’s dog’s graves. Tom told us about the Autograph Tree and about each signature on it. We then visited Lady Gregory’s dog’s graves which lie at the back of Coole Park’s walled garden.

Overall I think we all had a very enjoyable day and enjoyed learning about some of our local history.

Science Week 2018 at Kiltiernan N.S.

Science Week 2018 at Kiltiernan N.S.

Science Week at Kiltiernan is always a blast, but Science Week 2018 was very exciting indeed!  For Science Week, we not only got to see experiments up close, we also got to do some ourselves!  Fourth to sixth class got into groups to show off some exceptional experiments to the rest of the children.

Here is a taste of some of the experiments!

Volcano: My group and one other were lucky enough to get the volcano experiment. With just a few ingredients, a bottle and some rocks to make it look like a real volcano, we got to see the two volcanoes erupting with “lava”.

Uublee: The group that got the Uublee Experiment had a massive task at hand.  Uublee is a type of slime that is hard when you punch it and slimy when you hold it.  They had to have a precise balance between the ingredients to get the correct outcome.

Fizzy Rockets: This was the only experiment that had to be held outside.  (I wonder why?) We experimented with different temperatures of water and the conclusion was that the hottest temperatures of water made the rocket go higher.

Overall I think that Science Week was a big success, and I look forward to Science Week next year!

Panto Practise 2019

The children in Kiltiernan N.S. are very busy working on their panto. The Senior Room (4th to 6th class) are performing ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ for their play and the Middle Room (1st to 3rd class) are performing ‘Bill’s New Frock’. We are making a big effort to make these pantos perfect!

The Senior Room have decided to put extra work into their play outside school hours. They stay back after school on Mondays and Fridays from 3 to 4 to practise. Ms Leech, their class room teacher is directing the play. There is a special surprise at the start of the play which is an appetiser for our play!

The Middle Room (1st to 3rd class) are working on ‘Bill’s New Frock’. Their classroom teacher, Ms O’Doherty, is directing the play. They work on their play for about an hour every day.

If you are interested in catching a glimpse of our play we are performing it on the 19th of February in Labane Hall at 6.30 pm.

I hope you enjoy the play!

GLASNEVIN CEMETERY

GLASNEVIN CEMETERY

On The 11th of December 2018, 6th Class from 4 local schools including Kiltiernan, travelled to Dublin to visit Glasnevin Cemetery, where some of the most famous people from Irish history are buried. We arrived in Dublin and headed to Glasnevin Cemetery. When we got there, we were given tour guides and there were one tour guide between two schools. We visited some iconic graves and also saw where people’s cremated remains are kept. Our tour guide Grainne told us a story about how she had a family member buried there and had only found out recently. We went inside the tomb of Daniel O’Connell and saw his coffin. I touched his coffin for good luck. After that we saw many more graves including Charles Stuart Parnell who fought for Irish Home Rule, Countess Markievicz, who as our tour guide said, wasn’t really a countess at all – her husband just decided to put ‘Count’ in his name! We saw Michael Collins’s grave and I got a picture at his grave. I really enjoyed the experience of Glasnevin I would recommend it to anyone who is would like to learn about history.

Many thanks to Fr. Roche for bringing my class on a tour of Glasnevin and the Dáil.

Christmas Fair

Christmas Fair

Our schools Christmas Fair was in Labane Hall on the 9th of December 2018. There was food, toys and art for sale and lots more fun activities to do. Then our choir went to sing in the church for a while for all the parents and children. When they came back, Santa followed them and rang a bell around the hall. We raised money for our school to help buy books and toys for the students of Kiltiernan N.S.

Active School

Kiltiernan NS recognises the importance of keeping fit and being fit for both physical and mental wellbeing. In conjunction with the 3 local schools, we are engaged in a programme during school hours that has been designed by Aoife Lynskey, a PE Teacher from Gort Community School. Last year Gort CS were presented with the prestigious award of Ireland’s Fittest School, and we are excited to be working with Aoife to promote an active and fun programme for our students. Aoife recently conducted beep tests for students from 3rd-6th classes, and each child is aiming to beat their original results over the next 4 weeks – so keep moving everyone!

Middle Room Blog First Term 2018

Middle Room Blog First Term 2018

We are back to school with a bang and ready for action in 2018-2019. In September, along with all our usual hard work at school, we had time to go on tours away from school.

First Class went with Infants and Ms. Forde to see the beautiful play put on during the Babaro Children’s Festival. The play was titled ‘How to Catch a Star’ and we all really enjoyed the day out.

On the 26th of September, 2nd to 6th classes had a fantastic time on a local history tour with Tom O Doherty. We got the bus to the Mausoleum in Cregclare and learned about the history of the people buried there. From there, we drove to the Round Tower in Kilmacduagh and learned many interesting facts about why the tower was built and the tactics the monks used to stay safe in dangerous times. We took some cool photos and they are on the website so you can join in on the fun!  Later, we popped into Coole Park where we heard about the Autograph Tree and saw the headstones for Lady Gregory’s little dogs. It was a very educational and fun day.

In September, the school hosted a coffee morning as a fundraiser for the Galway Hospice. The girls in the senior room had a stall for hot chocolate and treats, yum! It’s great that we can eat treats and raise money for a great cause.

In October, Ms. Fenlon and Ms. Leech are teaching us a programme to develop our wellbeing. Fun Friends and Friends for Life help us all express our feelings and learn ways to cope with worries.

We had the opportunity to play and experiment with Beebots for Maths Week thanks to Ms. Forde who got them for us to trial.

We continued our football, hurling and camogie training and we had great success with the Mini 7s Competition in Camogie. The girls won the initial group stages and we made it to the final in a wet and windy Annaghdown pitch. We were beaten by a great team but had nice treats on the way to celebrate our efforts.

Of course, the usual dress up for Halloween was on the day of the holidays and everyone got a bualadh bos for great effort in their outfits.

We had a very enjoyable Friendship Week where we buddied up with students from another class, did Art and reading together and had great chats about what it means to be a good friend.

We joined in with the Senior Room to do lots of work for Science Week. We worked in groups to do experiments on Heat and Light and also in October, we were able to watch presentations by the Senior Room on new business ideas that they wanted to put to ‘Dragons’ to see if they would invest.

In December, we held the Christmas Fair where we sold slime, sweets and everything in between! The Parents’ Council did a wonderful job in organising and preparing for the Fair and raised lots of money for our great school.

After that excitement was done, we spent a lot of time preparing Christmas Carols and songs with Ms. Fenlon for our annual visit to the local nursing homes. We love going to the nursing homes and singing for the elderly people who live there.

We’ve had a great first term and are looking forward to term 2. Happy Christmas everyone, see you all in 2019!!!

Hospice Coffee Morning 2018

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported our 5th Annual Coffee Morning in aid of Galway Hospice, on September 20th. As always our wonderful bakers provided lots of goodies for this special morning. We raised an amazing €715.60 for the Hospice which will be used to provide services in the Galway area. Go raibh maith agat.
