Graduation 2018

On Thursday the 21st of June, 2018’s sixth-class graduated from our school. We put a lot into the preparation, like choir practice, making memory sheets, and practicing our readings. Each child was given a job that- however small and would contribute greatly to the ceremony, including the opening precession, singing solos, and readings.

We started off with the opening precession, which had eight of the sixth-class students bring up items that acted as symbols of our experiences over the years in Kiltiernan N.S.

Then we read out the Liturgy of the Word. Following that we had the Gospel, the Blessing of the Young People,  a parent’s Reflection, a  Blessing of the Parents and Guardians, the Statement of young People, and finally the Prayers of the Faithful.

We followed  this  with the presentation of the Certificates of Attendance and the performance of two songs from the incredibly inspiring musical ‘The Greatest Showman’

Before the ceremony we were told to write letters of thanks to our parents and vice versa. We exchanged them and read them later. Subsequently we were given prayer rocks by Elaine Cunningham.

Afterwards our principal, Miss Leech, gave her address, We received had our special Kiltiernan blessing and we finished with our symbolic balloon release on a beautiful summers’ evening.

County Hurling Champions 2018

On the 14th June the Kiltiernan hurlers had a county final in Loughgeorge, Claregalway. The team was all set when we left the school at nine thirty. The match started at eleven o’ clock. We had plenty of supporters from 2nd to 6th to cheer us on. Laurencetown NS were our opponents for the match. We changed and started our warm up to prepare for the game. When eleven o’ clock came we were ready to try our best.

The referee threw the ball in and the game was underway.  At the start we both exchanged 2 points each and the game was beginning to really be a great game of hurling. But then, Sean picked out Stephen with a great pass who rounded his man and scored an amazing goal. It was 1-3 to 0-2 to Kiltiernan at half time.

When the second half came round we knew the opposition would come out hard. We started quickly and scored another thanks to Stephen to bring his tally to 2-4. We kept going as a team and everyone on the panel put in great effort to help win this game. We kept going and scored another goal and a point from Stephen. When the final whistle blew we started to celebrate to our victory.

We went over and lifted the trophy and took some pictures and enjoyed every bit of it. After, we went to Supermacs and thanks to the school for that. We would also like to thank Ms O’ Doherty and Barry Duffy for coaching us a helping us. It was a great day for Kiltiernan NS.

School Tour 2018

On Monday 25th we went on our school tour. Juniors to 1st went to Loughwell farm and 2nd to 6th went to AIT in Athlone for a lets go camp. When we arrived at AIT we were split into groups. The Middle and Senior room were split into two groups. The Senior room was called group 9 and the Middle room was called group 8. The senior room then went on the KMX’s and the Spider tower.  After those fun activities we had a small break.

Soon we went to the hall and we ran some relay races. After we did races on a bouncy castle slide. Later went outside onto the astro turf and played a game of lacrosse. Next we had our lunch and a talent show.

Up next was loads of fun going down a slide in a zorbie. We each had two goes. Two people were in a zorbie at one time. Shortly afterwards we went back into the main hall and went on the inflatable wrecking ball. We had our goes in fours on the wrecking ball. Next we went on a bouncy castle mountain.

Following that we went back on the astro turf and played a game of rip tag. We had to put a Velcro tag on our arm and we had to try and rip it off the other people. Sadly after our time was up and we had to leave l but we still had to go Shopping! We headed to the Golden Island shopping centre. We were split into groups and we had 35 minutes to go around the shopping centre and spend our hard earned cash. After shopping we headed home happy and content.

It was a great day and we had so much fun!

Tommy Baker’s Puppet Show

On Tuesday the 24th of October 2017, Tommy Baker made a visit to all of the pupils and staff of Kiltiernan NS. We all gathered in the hall. He performed the show of the ‘Salmon of Knowledge’. It was about Fionn  Mc Cumhail and Finnegas, who owned the Salmon of Knowledge. The puppets looked amazing. He did one other show for 3rd class up. It was played by handmade puppets. They were made from wood. It was a wonderful show. It was a great way to spend one afternoon!!!

CHRISTMAS CARDS

Every year in our school we make Christmas cards. We get a piece of paper to draw on and we draw what we’d want on the front of our Christmas cards. Then we send them out to get printed. About a week later we get our Christmas cards back. We can get cards with our picture on the front or teddies with t-shirts that have our pictures on them. We always have great fun making our cards. Everybody made great cards. I can’t wait to make them again next year!

Grandparents Day at Kiltiernan N.S

On the 6th of October Kiltiernan celebrated Grandparents’ Day by inviting them to our school. On Grandparents’ Day it was very exciting. All the students made sure the hálla was decorated in interviews, drawings and many other projects all made by us children.

When they arrived the grandparents were invited to take a seat in the hálla.

Ms Leech made a heart-warming speech talking about how much we appreciate our grandparents coming and the happiness of us kids when we see them.

Mr O Doherty came in and talked to us about old artefacts such as and old schoolbag, and old doll, a foot warmer and even a coat of arms used in the Battle of Aughrim which took place in 1691. There was also an old receipt and a curling tongs holder.

We then sang our hearts out and brought back our grandparent’s memories by singing songs that they might have heard when they were young.

Soon after we went back to our classrooms and asked questions about our grandparent’s lives. It was very interesting.

I think Grandparents’ Day was a big success with everyone!

Grease

We went to see Grease in Kilcornan on Thursday the 16th of November which was produced and staged by Seamount Secondary School.

It was great fun seeing all the older boys and girls dress up and sing and dance their hearts out. We saw a few past pupils on stage and thought about how much we’re going to love being on stage in the near future!

Origami Workshop

For Science Week, we were lucky enough to have a workshop on the skills of Origami. Tom showed some samples of shapes that he had folded and explained the role of Origami in Maths, Science and Engineering.

He showed the class how to create an ancient Japanese envelope and after, we made lovely birds too. It was very educational and great fun too.

Liam McCarthy Visit

We were delighted to welcome the Liam McCarthy cup to the school on the 21st of November. We were all dressed up in Galway gear and we were honoured to touch, take pictures with and ask questions to the members of the panel.
