May in the Middle Room

May in the Middle Room

Swimming: We have been making wonderful progress in our swimming each Friday. We are perfecting our swimming strokes and becoming more efficient at changing in and out of swimsuits and showering. Our instructors are kind and pleased with our improvement. We love the bus trip with Joe, up Kilcornan Avenue, under the tree branches. We are ravenous when we get back!

Holy Communion: Our main event this month, among many important events, was our Holy Communion. Fourteen children, twelve boys and two girls came to receive their first Communion in all their finery on the 10th of May. Everyone had a special role in the ceremony and performed their task impressively. We had lovely comments from visitors about how well it went and how kind and warm our class were with each other. It was a very special day and we are so thankful to our parents, to Martina Glynn and Martina Carr on the Parents’ Parish Team and of course Fr. Roche for helping us prepare for our big day.

Well-earned Breaks We have had two lovely breaks, one Bank Holiday and one day when our school closed for the Local and European Elections. Our school is a polling station. We talked about the candidates in the election and the work our councillors do on the County Council. Ben and Alannah from 6th Class showed us a PowerPoint about the candidates and the electoral regions. We were very impressed!

Testing Time! We have begun our Drumcondra Tests, starting with English. It was a big step for First Class as it was their first experience of the challenge of this type of standardised test. So we recommended an early night, a sharp pencil and an eraser and a cool head! Every year we hope children will achieve their own personal best in each test and we are delighted to say this has happened so far.

College Links: Anne Dolan, lecturer from Mary Immaculate Teacher Training College visited us to view our PowerPoints on the trips we took over Easter. We used Google Earth and AA mapping tools to illustrate our journeys from home to the various destinations from Galway to Cavan to Dublin to Clare to London! She told us she was really impressed with our IT skills and a bit jealous of our Easter holidays! She will be publishing a book in 2015 to assist primary teachers to teach the primary geography curriculum. Below is Ava’s PowerPoint Presentation about her visit to Connemara!

Special Olympians Visit

Special Olympics – On Thursday the 22nd of May, we were called in to the hall to meet Special Olympians, and past pupils, Siobhan Conneely and David McLaughlin. Siobhan is Liam’s aunt. They will represent Connaught in dressage and kayaking. It was very interesting to hear about their sports and to ask them about their plans. Siobhan hopes to study art and design, while David plans a career in animation. We had great fun chatting to them and are very proud of our past pupils.

Latvia

We have recently finished a project on the country Latvia. We read about it in our SESE book. We did fact files on Riga the capital and on the country itself. We wrote a letter from a Latvian person living in Ireland to their family in Latvia. {Did you know?} The first evergreen tree for Christmas celebrations took place in Riga, 1510. Did you know?

The most popular chocolate in Latvia is Laima after the Laima Clock in Riga.

ScienceFusion

This month in the senior room, we have been going online to www.folensonline.ie and watching some  Science Fusion videos. We have been viewing many different videos such as, ‘’Mirrors and Lenses’’, ‘’What is a Food Chain?’’, ‘’Engineering in our world’’ and ‘’What is Water Power?’’ and we have been learning lots. You might think that educational videos are really boring, but they are actually very interesting!!

Trip to the Cathedral

Our trip to the Cathedral

On the 13th of May, a week before our Confirmation the 6th class of Kiltiernan, Labane and Ballyglass went for a tour of the Cathedral in Galway. When we arrived we walked up a flight of stairs to the organ. The organ was huge. It had lots of different pipes which made lots of different sounds. There were 3 different keyboards which have different pitches. The man who played the organ showed us how if he pulled knobs and pushed buttons the organ would make the sounds and tones of different instruments. Later we went outside to see the huge entrance doors. There were pictures on these doors which told stories from the bible of some of the sacraments. We examined the stain glass windows which also had stories from the bible on them. The group then walked up the aisle looking at the Stations of the Cross which were made of stone by a woman from Dublin over 20 years. We went down underground to the Crypt where the Bishops are buried. We saw portraits of the old Bishops and the map of the diocese. Overall it was a brilliant day! Thank you to Fr Roche from all of us for a great trip.
