Blue Star Programme

The blue star programme is a programme that helps children learn about the European Union and how it works. In our school we did lots of things…

We did power points on EU countries in groups. I was in a group with Ross and Sean and our country was Greece. We had to have a visual thing to do with our EU countries. You could have a flag or anything that could be passed around or put on the white board.

We put together power points on events that changed the history of Europe. I did the foundation of the EU. I learned all about Jenne Monnet and the EU headquarters. We researched European artists and learned all about their lives as an artist.

We also (in groups) put together a word document about MEPs. We learned about what they do in each of the headquarters and what Irish MEPs are in what constituency. But my favourite was the national food tasting day. Everyone in the senior and middle room made and brought in a European dish. All the French people had a desk to design and set up. I made crepes, everyone at the French table made desserts so we were very popular.

In a few weeks’ time we are going to have a visit from Mairead McGuiness. She is an Irish MEP. She is going to tell us about her job. We were asked by our teacher in our groups to write up questions to ask her. We also had to write a letter to invite her to come to our school. We are all very excited to have a visit from Mairead McGuiness.

Dear Mairead McGuiness,

Hi! My name is Grace and I am a 5th class student in Kiltiernan N.S. today I have been asked by my teacher Ms. Leech to write you a letter to invite you to our school.

You may be thinking why we want you to visit our school. Well we are inviting you to our school because we are doing a programme called the blue star programme. In this programme we learn about the EU, the history of the EU and how it works.

Our classroom has done many things to increase our knowledge about the EU including…

  • We did power points in groups about EU countries including fact files
  • We put together power points on European events that have changed the history of the EU
  • We researched European artists and inventors.

But my personal favourite was of course the European food tasting day! We had to make European dishes.

All the French people had a table with all their food and so on. I made crepes. All the French people had deserts so I think we were very popular. Any way I was asked to write you a letter of invitation so…

I really hope you will come to Kiltiernan NS. You visited here in 2014-as part of  a  tour of flooded areas in South Galway .You wrote in our visitors book that you would  come back! Hope to see you soon.

Pantomime Preparation

Pantomime Preparation
This year we are producing a Pantomime in our school. The Panto is ‘Alas in Blunderland’. We have been practising a long time with different characters and have finally come out of audition. The plot is a few fairy tales mixed all in to one. At the start there is a fairy tale ‘Goldilocks’ then some more fairy tales and in the end they all met for one large finally.
We have not got enough people so we have some people have to double up and some people only have one character. My Characters are ‘Wolf 3’ and ‘Harry Huntsmen’. I really enjoy the preparation for the Pantomime and I love watching the parts I’m not and am in because there are some very funny jokes and parts and characters.
Everyone knows nearly all their lines but have ideas for costumes and are busy chattering about what the costumes will be like. If you gave Ms. Leech a euro every time she told them she has it under control I would say she would be a millionaire!

Letter to Mairead McGuinness MEP

Dear Ms McGuinness,
How are you keeping? My name is David from 5th class in Kiltiernan NS. This name might ring a bell because, yes, you have been here before on a tour of South Galway.
At the moment we are currently working on the Blue Star programme that engages young people to learn more about the EU and MEPs.
Currently we have done a geography project on EU countries. We have also done projects on Historical European events such as World War I and World War II. We have also researched European artists/inventors and how the EU parliament works.
Finally, we have hosted an EU food tasting day. We chose food from the EU and cooked it. Then on one Wednesday we served in small portions to the school. Everybody really enjoyed the day.
Mairead, we would love if you could come to our school and tell us about your job. We would love to know about a ‘day in the life of an MEP.

Pantomime 2017

Pantomime preparation

We are all working very hard on our school pantomimes. The middle room are performing ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and the senior room are presenting ‘Alas in Blunderland. The senior room first got underway by reading the script of course. Then we read and read until we got very familiar with the script and the lines. Shortly afterwards we were on to auditions which was very exciting. On Thursday morning we got our roles. I am Brutal the ugly sister and Ross is the other ugly sister Obnoxious. Emma got Cinders. She is excellent. Also Melanie got to be Cinderella, which she is very good at. David got Buttons and Toby became the fairy godmother. He has to put on an American accent. He is very funny. We are now in rehearsals and working very hard. The panto night is on the 7th of April. I am very excited for the big night. We also have our dress rehearsals on the 5th of April. Our costumes are gorgeous. The ugly sister’s costumes are so amusing and horrid. I can’t wait for the big night!

Dear Mairead McGuinness
Hello my name is Melanie I am a fifth class student in Kilternan national school. We started the Blue Star project before Christmas and it would be a pleasure to have you come to our school if you have the time. You came to our school before when you were touring around Galway and promised us that you would return in later times and I am almost sure that it is later times now! In the blue star programme we did power points on famous artisst in Europe. We also did a European food day where every pupil from second class the whole way up to sixth class picked a Eureopean dish- either savoury or sweet and displayed it and all the pupils tasted everyone’s dish. The last step is to get a member of the European parliament to come to our school and talk to us about what he/she does. As a result of that I would like to invite you to come to visit our school.

Order of Malta visit

Order of Malta

 

On the 18th of January 2017, a lady named Maire from the Order of Malta visited our school. She is an officer in charge.

She is a medical scientist. The order of Malta is a volunteer ambulance service. They are mainly seen at GAA and Rugby matches, road races and local events. They contribute immediate first aid. Each member of the order of Malta carries around a medical bag.

The order of Malta originated when tourists travelled to Jerusalem to see where Jesus was born. They were called ‘crusaders’. It was setup by St Gerard to help sick children and adults.

They first settled in Malta which is now the headquarters. The order of Malta meets once every two weeks to learn first aid.

Maire showed the class many procedures including how to bandage and do CPR. There are many cadet units around Ireland. The ones in Galway are in Craughwell and Mervue.

I really enjoyed Maire’s visit. I hope I could join the order of Malta in the future.
