RTE visit Kiltiernan in lead up to All-Ireland Final

On Tuesday, 2nd September RTE came to our school to tape a segment for the build up to the big game on Sunday. We are looking forward to seeing ourselves on telly Friday evening. Very best of luck to Galway against Kilkenny in the big game. We hope St. Anthony will answer our prayers and bring home Liam!

Summer in the Junior Room

Summer in the Junior Room

Summer has officially arrived even though someone forgot to tell Mr. Sun! May had us working hard on our Drumcondra Tests and other subjects. We had some fun thrown in there for good measure too though! We loved learning how to swim in 1st, and hearing all Captain Bird’s Eye’s safety tips about water. First Class enjoyed hurling with Joe and is already looking forward to next year. Our May birthdays are Marlon and Matthew Heffernan, happy birthday guys.

We met our new infants and parents, and we are looking forward to welcoming seven boys and three new girls in September.

In the last few weeks we had a visit from the RSA and Lagan Construction to talk to us about staying safe on the roads. So, we have assigned ourselves as Seatbelt Sheriffs, and we will keep doing the annoying beep to remind you to ‘Belt Up’!

We held Graduation for Oisín, Hannah, Eoghan, Chloe and Ian and wish them well in ‘big school’. We will miss you all.

Our school tour took us to Turoe Pet Farm, where we played in a huge soft play area, bounced the daylights out of the largest bouncy castle and slide in Europe, played outdoors to name just a few. Even Miss O Doherty, Patricia and Martina had a go or two on the slide! We saw and fed donkeys, alpacas, rabbits, goats and sheep. We also tried to wake ‘Dundee’ the Crocodile because yes, we are that brave! Thanks to all mums and dads who let us go.  Check out the gallery for photos of our amazing day.

Sports Day was a great success, and we took part in activities such as running, relay, sack races, spud and spoon races, three legged races and piggy back races and were so tired we could have slept for a week after!

Happy birthday to summer babies Emily in June, Sophia in July and Erin and Aidan in August.

We would like to wish everyone a fantastic and safe summer and we are looking forward to catching up with everyone in September.  I would like to wish First Class all the best for next year.  I’ll still be seeing you every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for SESE so we can catch up then! To all the parents in Kiltiernan, thank you all for your wonderful support throughout the year. Your children are fantastic and you all should be very proud of each and every one of them. Happy summer everyone!!!

Galway County Schools Sports 2015

Schools’ County Sports Day

May 26th 2015

On Tuesday the 26th of May some students from 1st to 6th class travelled to Dangan to participate in in a schools athletics competition. We initially ran off an internal event in our school to pick the pupils who would represent Kiltiernan.

It was an early start for competitors as we had to leave our homes at 8:00 am to be in Dangan for 9:30 Am. We arrived early so that gave us time to run a lap around the track and warm up. Once the races had begun time flew and before you knew we were ready for the semi-finals. Orla, Grace, Tara, Abbie, Stephen and David had all made it to the Semi Finals. The boys’ relay made it straight into the final. After some very competitive semi- finals Abbie and Stephen qualified for their respective finals. Stephens’s race was on first. He was partaking in the under 11 boys’ 400 metre race. Thankfully he ran a great race and finished 2nd picking up a silver medal- our first of the day. Next Abbie ran in the girls’ 100m sprint. After a tight race she finished an honourable 4th.  The last race of the day saw the boys’ relay team finish a fantastic fifth. Overall it was a fantastic day and we are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

Winter in the Junior Room

Winter in the Junior Room

The Junior Room will be having our Christmas Concert on Friday, the 12th of December at 2pm in the Halla in school. We will act out our Nativity drama, and following that, show ‘The Gruffalo’ video which every child in the class participated in creating, under the direction of puppeteer Tommy Baker, and Ms. O Doherty.
For any parent who cannot attend on that day, you would be more than welcome to come to see the dress rehearsal on Thursday the 11th in the Halla, at 1 pm.

We will be selling raffle tickets at our concert. These tickets sold will be included in the raffle at the main concert on Tuesday the 16th Dec 7pm in Labane hall.
First Class will also be part of the school choir which will perform a selection of Christmas Carols at the 2nd to 6th class concert on Tuesday the 16th.

Sr. Breda will be visiting for our yearly religious exam on November the 12th where our class will take part in a prayer service in the Halla.

Treat and Toy Friday is on November the 28th, and then December the19th.

We will get holidays at 12.30pm on December the 19th.

Our November birthday heroes are Peader and Killian.

December birthday dynamos are Alex, Corey and Orlaith.

Our only January jelly baby is Sarah.

Happy Christmas to everyone, and we wish a safe and peaceful Christmas, and a productive fun New Year.

Autumn in the Junior Room

 Autumn in The Junior Room

We had a busy autumn in the Junior Room.
We began working with puppeteer Tommy Baker to develop a drama based on our class novel ‘The Gruffalo’. We used some unusual instruments, such as a dulcimer  and an ubu to provide sound effects to recreate the sounds heard in a forest. Well done especially to Lauren our mouse, Matthew Quinn our fox, Sean the snake, Corey the owl, Meadbh as Gruffalo and Ellie the narrator.

We had a visit from Dawn from the Dogs Trust to teach us how to look after dogs and greet unfamiliar dogs.

We also met Kay who talked all about Biodiversity and how we can continue to promote it in our school.

Our fancy dress day in school went down a treat where we had ghosts, ghouls and guess who people to name just a few.

After that, the Parents’ Council ran a great Bingo fundraiser in Bradley’s in Labane which was a huge success.

Our summer birthday bunnies were Erin, Sophia and Aidan.

Happy birthday to our September Star Diarmuid.

Happy Birthday to the October legends Mark F and Iarla.

School Tour 2014

For the parents of Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First class

In Athenry Castle, we will dress up in medieval costume, have a tour of the castle and weather permitting, spend time outside on activities such as archery and partake in a maze treasure hunt.  After, we will eat lunch and head to Busy Bees for more fun.  You can collect your child at 3.15 at the school.

Suitable clothes

All children are asked to wear socks as they will have to take off their shoes in the indoor play area.  Please provide a raincoat for your child if there is any chance of rain on the day, and also sun screen in case we see the sun at any stage!

Lunch

The children can bring a packed lunch which we will eat there.  They will have small break and big break.  It wouldn’t be a tour if treats weren’t allowed but please don’t bring fizzy drinks or chewing gum as normal on treat Friday.  As we will be doing lots of running around, an extra drink in the lunchbox might be a good idea.
