Graduation 2018

On Thursday the 21st of June, 2018’s sixth-class graduated from our school. We put a lot into the preparation, like choir practice, making memory sheets, and practicing our readings. Each child was given a job that- however small and would contribute greatly to the ceremony, including the opening precession, singing solos, and readings.

We started off with the opening precession, which had eight of the sixth-class students bring up items that acted as symbols of our experiences over the years in Kiltiernan N.S.

Then we read out the Liturgy of the Word. Following that we had the Gospel, the Blessing of the Young People,  a parent’s Reflection, a  Blessing of the Parents and Guardians, the Statement of young People, and finally the Prayers of the Faithful.

We followed  this  with the presentation of the Certificates of Attendance and the performance of two songs from the incredibly inspiring musical ‘The Greatest Showman’

Before the ceremony we were told to write letters of thanks to our parents and vice versa. We exchanged them and read them later. Subsequently we were given prayer rocks by Elaine Cunningham.

Afterwards our principal, Miss Leech, gave her address, We received had our special Kiltiernan blessing and we finished with our symbolic balloon release on a beautiful summers’ evening.

Sports day and ice Cream day 2018

On Friday, 22/6/2018 sports day and ice-cream day was held in Kiltiernan N.S. We were instructed to bring in a sack, spoon and potato, tights and hurls if you wanted to participate in púc fáda. All  children from Sunflower Montessori to 6th class pupils in Kiltiernan  participated in a eventful sports day.

We started off the day with a eager 60m sprints from the junior infants to sixth class. As soon as Ms.Leech blew the whistle we saw the hopeful looks on all girls and boys faces as they sprinted for the finish line! After that we had some fun races including sackrace , egg and spoon race (but yet we used potatoes) , three legged races, wheel barrow races and also piggy back races.

After a few races we had a little break and we were told that you could get our two euro for the fundraiser for down syndrome Ireland, so when we got our two euro we all went to get ice-cream in the hall . It was a really nice award from all those races we ran and we raised one hundred and 85 euro for Down Syndrome Ireland!

Without delay the break flew by and we were back in action. Tug of war took place then and lots of students took part. We started with the lower classes and reached are way up to the older classes as the rivalry grew. Shortly afterwards we stared up relay races. All ages could take part. We had an over dose of fun. Suddenly it was 2:00pm and children started to go home early. There was only an hour left of school and 10 pupils left. We began a round of Púc Fada. After Púc Fada we played hurling and lots of soccer.

Unfortunately Sports day had to come to an end and we went home wondering would are school tour be as exciting as today sports day!

County Hurling Champions 2018

On the 14th June the Kiltiernan hurlers had a county final in Loughgeorge, Claregalway. The team was all set when we left the school at nine thirty. The match started at eleven o’ clock. We had plenty of supporters from 2nd to 6th to cheer us on. Laurencetown NS were our opponents for the match. We changed and started our warm up to prepare for the game. When eleven o’ clock came we were ready to try our best.

The referee threw the ball in and the game was underway.  At the start we both exchanged 2 points each and the game was beginning to really be a great game of hurling. But then, Sean picked out Stephen with a great pass who rounded his man and scored an amazing goal. It was 1-3 to 0-2 to Kiltiernan at half time.

When the second half came round we knew the opposition would come out hard. We started quickly and scored another thanks to Stephen to bring his tally to 2-4. We kept going as a team and everyone on the panel put in great effort to help win this game. We kept going and scored another goal and a point from Stephen. When the final whistle blew we started to celebrate to our victory.

We went over and lifted the trophy and took some pictures and enjoyed every bit of it. After, we went to Supermacs and thanks to the school for that. We would also like to thank Ms O’ Doherty and Barry Duffy for coaching us a helping us. It was a great day for Kiltiernan NS.

School Tour 2018

On Monday 25th we went on our school tour. Juniors to 1st went to Loughwell farm and 2nd to 6th went to AIT in Athlone for a lets go camp. When we arrived at AIT we were split into groups. The Middle and Senior room were split into two groups. The Senior room was called group 9 and the Middle room was called group 8. The senior room then went on the KMX’s and the Spider tower.  After those fun activities we had a small break.

Soon we went to the hall and we ran some relay races. After we did races on a bouncy castle slide. Later went outside onto the astro turf and played a game of lacrosse. Next we had our lunch and a talent show.

Up next was loads of fun going down a slide in a zorbie. We each had two goes. Two people were in a zorbie at one time. Shortly afterwards we went back into the main hall and went on the inflatable wrecking ball. We had our goes in fours on the wrecking ball. Next we went on a bouncy castle mountain.

Following that we went back on the astro turf and played a game of rip tag. We had to put a Velcro tag on our arm and we had to try and rip it off the other people. Sadly after our time was up and we had to leave l but we still had to go Shopping! We headed to the Golden Island shopping centre. We were split into groups and we had 35 minutes to go around the shopping centre and spend our hard earned cash. After shopping we headed home happy and content.

It was a great day and we had so much fun!

Quiz Winners

Congratulations to our U13 and U11 quiz teams who both placed 2nd at the Meadowcourt Quiz recently. 72 teams participated so we are very proud of our teams on their superb achievements. All the hard work paid off!

Then it was off to Gort where our U13s proved victorious in a hard fought battle for first place in the Credit Union Quiz, which ended in a tie-break! We held our nerve and were very excited, and relieved, to be announced winners. Our U11 team came a very respectable 3rd place. Now it’s back to work for the next round of the quiz, in Galway, in March.

We have lots of exciting prizes for our next 2 raffles and all envelopes for the last 3 draws will be included in our draw on Thursday 21st December. Kiltiernans Christmas Cards

Kiltiernan’s Christmas Cards!

To get us students of Kiltiernan into the Christmas spirit our teachers thought it would be a good idea to give us Christmas cards! But not just any Christmas cards…. we get to design them ourselves!

Mid October, our resource teacher told us that a company called Christmas Cards for Schools would be producing our Christmas cards that we designed and that we could draw anything we wanted -as long as it was Christmas related- on an A4 piece of paper. We had to give it back to our teacher before the following Friday.

Once we started drawing you couldn’t stop us! The classroom was nice and quiet as we drew Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus. Everyone in the class let their creativity loose and we have made beautiful Christmas cards to give to their relatives!

Our sample Christmas cards were given back to us just before the Halloween break and  we were told that we could order more of our cards if we wanted to.

Getting Christmas cards with our own designs was a great treat. We really enjoyed it and would love to do again. And remember, folks, the weather outside may be frightful but the Christmas cards are delightful!

Irish Dancing

Irish dancing

Every Wednesday all of students who would like to do Irish dancing go to the halla at the allocated time for Irish dancing. The person who teaches us Irish dancing is called Louise. Louise is very generous to give a time out of her busy day to teach us how to Irish dance and we are very grateful. My group is the oldest group which is the 5th and 6th class boys and girls. This year we do not have a show but every second year we do. This year the 5th and 6th class group are  doing the 8 hand reel followed by the 3 hand. We also worked on the brush dance. I always enjoy going to Irish dancing and hopefully you would too!
