Panto Practise 2019

The children in Kiltiernan N.S. are very busy working on their panto. The Senior Room (4th to 6th class) are performing ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ for their play and the Middle Room (1st to 3rd class) are performing ‘Bill’s New Frock’. We are making a big effort to make these pantos perfect!

The Senior Room have decided to put extra work into their play outside school hours. They stay back after school on Mondays and Fridays from 3 to 4 to practise. Ms Leech, their class room teacher is directing the play. There is a special surprise at the start of the play which is an appetiser for our play!

The Middle Room (1st to 3rd class) are working on ‘Bill’s New Frock’. Their classroom teacher, Ms O’Doherty, is directing the play. They work on their play for about an hour every day.

If you are interested in catching a glimpse of our play we are performing it on the 19th of February in Labane Hall at 6.30 pm.

I hope you enjoy the play!

GLASNEVIN CEMETERY

GLASNEVIN CEMETERY

On The 11th of December 2018, 6th Class from 4 local schools including Kiltiernan, travelled to Dublin to visit Glasnevin Cemetery, where some of the most famous people from Irish history are buried. We arrived in Dublin and headed to Glasnevin Cemetery. When we got there, we were given tour guides and there were one tour guide between two schools. We visited some iconic graves and also saw where people’s cremated remains are kept. Our tour guide Grainne told us a story about how she had a family member buried there and had only found out recently. We went inside the tomb of Daniel O’Connell and saw his coffin. I touched his coffin for good luck. After that we saw many more graves including Charles Stuart Parnell who fought for Irish Home Rule, Countess Markievicz, who as our tour guide said, wasn’t really a countess at all – her husband just decided to put ‘Count’ in his name! We saw Michael Collins’s grave and I got a picture at his grave. I really enjoyed the experience of Glasnevin I would recommend it to anyone who is would like to learn about history.

Many thanks to Fr. Roche for bringing my class on a tour of Glasnevin and the Dáil.

Christmas Fair

Christmas Fair

Our schools Christmas Fair was in Labane Hall on the 9th of December 2018. There was food, toys and art for sale and lots more fun activities to do. Then our choir went to sing in the church for a while for all the parents and children. When they came back, Santa followed them and rang a bell around the hall. We raised money for our school to help buy books and toys for the students of Kiltiernan N.S.

Active School

Kiltiernan NS recognises the importance of keeping fit and being fit for both physical and mental wellbeing. In conjunction with the 3 local schools, we are engaged in a programme during school hours that has been designed by Aoife Lynskey, a PE Teacher from Gort Community School. Last year Gort CS were presented with the prestigious award of Ireland’s Fittest School, and we are excited to be working with Aoife to promote an active and fun programme for our students. Aoife recently conducted beep tests for students from 3rd-6th classes, and each child is aiming to beat their original results over the next 4 weeks – so keep moving everyone!

1916 Gardening

This year the pupils from 2nd to 6th were weeding and watering the garden. We all split up into groups and covered a patch in the garden.  We all had different tools to use for the weeding such as: trowels, hedge clippers and mini pitchforks. Some groups would take the weeds out of the groves on the path. We also found some wildlife like worms and frogs. We were not just working in the centenary garden but all over the school grounds. We were also sweeping leaves of the tarmac and were happy to be doing it for the school. It looked good afterwards and Miss Leech was very happy with our work for the Graduation.

Confirmation 2018

On the 3rd of May sixth class woke up very excited because it was their Confirmation day. Our ceremony was at 3 o’clock. We had previously completed “You shall be my witness programme”. We also had a ceremony of light mass marking our pledge to abstain alcohol drink till a certain age. The church was packed and we were rehearsed and ready to go. We were with Ballyglass for our ceremony. Our celebrant was Cannon Rabbitte.

Firstly at the start of the mass there was an offertory procession. Then we had the liturgy of the word. Grace and Emma sang the psalm and Melanie sang the alleluia. Then came the renewal of baptismal promises. That is one of the three parts of confirmation. We had to respond with “I do”.

Next we had the laying on of the hand which consists of the cannon laying his hands on us. After that we had the anointing with chrism when your sponsor stands behind you and puts their hand on your shoulder which symbolises your sponsor being there for you.

Next we came to the prayers of the faithful. Sean S, Patrick, Toby, Sean C and David all said a prayer. Finally at the end of the ceremony Adam did a reflection on “What confirmation means to me”.  At the end of the ceremony everyone was congratulating us and taking pictures. Later some people went to their houses and some people went out for dinner. Everyone really enjoyed their confirmation 2018

The Bush

The bush is a bush that some 6th class boys started using to relax and talk in.

The bush started one day when 5 boys (Diarmuid, Patrick, David, Stephen and Toby) went into the bush for a game of 40, 40. Diarmuid started hollowing out the bush and emptying out the briars. We then started to put down the bedding.

After that we had a storm and lots of branches fell down so we picked them up and put them on top so we had cover. We then started spending all our time in the bush and the teachers and all the class came into the bush and amazingly there was still enough room to move around. The ‘Bush gang’ had now extended to 7 people Diarmuid, Patrick, Stephen, David, Toby, Sean Slevin and Adam Cahill.

World Cup 2018

Projects: Edel, Eimear and Grace

The World Cup is a sporting event that is held every four years. 32 football teams from all over the world represent their country in a football tournament. They are divided into groups of four and every team plays the other teams in their group and the top two teams qualify to the next stage.

To celebrate this event the middle and the senior rooms drew out a country and did a project based on that country. The project had to include: Capital, Currency, Map, Language, Population, Tourist attractions, Food, Culture, physical Features, World Cup History and players to watch. For example Edel got Morocco, Eimear got Portugal and Grace got Nigeria.

Our Dream Team for World Cup 2018 is as follows:

Galway County Sports

On the 29th of May, around 20 athletes from Kiltiernan National School travelled to Dangan running track in Galway to compete in the schools Athletics Competition for 2018.

We competed in many events including 60m, 400m, 100m, 800m and relay runs. We were to be in Dangan for 08:00 to stretch and to get ready to run. We had pupils from 2nd class up to 6th class competing. We did run offs to decide who went to compete. The 1st 2nd and 3rd placing athletes in the run off went to compete in that event. We did the same run offs for anyone who was interested in being on a relay team and we then put relay teams together. There was one boy’s team one girl’s team from 2nd class up to 6th class. It was a fun day and we came back to school with several medals. We really enjoyed ourselves.
