Credit Union Prize Giving

Credit Union Prize Giving

On the 28th of November, Orlaith and I went to the Gort Credit Union to be presented with a prize!

One day Ms Fenlon announced that there was a drawing competition for the Credit Union. It took me a long while before I was finished and I never thought I would be going to Gort for a mystery prize!

I walked in to the Gort Credit Union to hear a lady offering a sweet. I couldn’t see Orlaith yet. I looked at the other drawings. (Still no Orlaith!) Then they were going to present our age group and Orlaith came. I came 2nd and Orlaith came 1st! We both got a black and a card. As soon as we got them we opened them. Inside was a voucher for the Gort Educational World shop. Mum said that I could spend it at Christmas but I’m sure I will spend it sooner than that!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Yesterday, the 24th of November 2016 Deirdre visited our classroom. Deirdre’s job is a graphic designer. She is also a good friend of Ms. O’Doherty. She designs posters, book covers, logos and website designs. Deirdre told us about a regular day on her work shift. She would normally begin with meetings in the morning where her colleagues share their ideas. Then they would also do some sketches for their clients who want a logo or a website designs. Then they would present it to the client and then to the world! Right now Deirdre is working on Christmas eir DMs (daily mailings). Deirdre said that they used sharpies to do some sketches to see how they would plan it. Deirdre said that they do the final design on computer.

She joined our art lesson. We were doing winter pictures with our teacher Ms. Fenlon. She showed us how to work with chalk pastels and drew a house, a tree, a fence, some swirls to represent the wind and the sky as an example. Deirdre drew the lamp posts and gave the sky some finishing touches! When we started our winter pictures. Ms. Fenlon and Deirdre pointed out to us that we should start with the background using lighter colours and build up to the darker colours in the foreground. Every once in a while something would be added to the picture on the white board. Deirdre asked us if we would like to have her job as a Graphic Designer. Everybody put their hand up, and that’s twenty-eight kids! We all love art!

SCIENCE WEEK: VISIT FROM NOEL MURPHY

SCIENCE WEEK:

VISIT FROM NOEL MURPHY

During Science Week a man called Noel Murphy who works for Intel came to our school with a 3D printer. First he showed us a really cool video of the future of fireworks. There were lots of musicians playing in an orchestra and instead of fireworks they were using drones. They made different shapes and at the end it made the word Intel in a speech bubble. It was so cool.

Then he brought us into the halla and showed us the actual 3D printer. He used the printer to make us a referee’s whistle. It took about two hours to print the whistle so it worked while we went back to class and we saw the finished product later that day. He also showed us a sample of other different things made on the printer. One of the samples he showed us was of an elephant. He asked us how we thought it worked to print it. He explained 3D printing works by using melted plastic instead of ink and by building the piece up with the melted plastic layer by layer.

He then asked how we think making the whistle would work because of the ball inside of it. How do you get the ball inside the whistle? Someone answered by saying that you make the ball and then make the other bit beside it and put the ball inside of it. But the 3D printer can’t do that. Then I said that you make it layer by layer so you make the bottom of the whistle then the ball on a tiny post stuck to the base of it then close off the top of it. I was right!

The other materials you can use in a 3D printer are plastic, metals, glass and even chocolate! The products you can make are toys, body armour, helmets etc. You can even make body parts like ears noses and organs! The most interesting fact I learned is that you can construct everything layer by layer. The drones shown in the PowerPoint show was so cool because the drones were moving to the music and it showed how they showed the word ‘Intel’.

I enjoyed Noel’s visit a lot and I hope he comes back again.

K.N.S.: The Competitions We Are Entering

K.N.S.: The Competitions We Are Entering

In Kiltiernan N.S. we enter lots of competitions. The middle room competed in the Gort Credit Union’s poster competition. The theme was ‘dreams are made of this’. I drew a pig flying over a rainbow and a seal with a patterned ball on its nose.

We also did the Ireland’s Own short story competition. It had a limit of 400 to 1,000 words. There were 5 topics. The topics were A Day Minding Grandad, Down the Back Of the Sofa, The Expensive Dress, A Letter from Mars and My School after Dark. I did A Day Minding Grandad. We all did it. We have until Halloween to finish. I have finished mine, but not everyone has.

We also entered a school competition on Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show. It was to win €1,000 for your school. We had to write about why our school is so special and what we would use the money for. Unfortunately we didn’t win.

Anyway, we entered the I.C.A. (Irish Countrywomen’s Association) Halloween short story competition. We had to make it spooky but not too spooky!

We competed in athletics cross country competition. 2 of the 6 people we sent got near first place. The rest came around the middle. We do a lot of competitions in 2nd 3rd and 4th class.

Mark’s Birthday

Mark’s Birthday

On the 7th of October 2016, it was Mark Fordham’s birthday. We had a big celebration at school! There was a bouncy castle, face painting and some treats for the kids that our wonderful parents council provided. We got to dress up in costumes of all the things Mark liked. Mark was 9 years old on that day. At big break, we got dressed into our costumes. I was a fairy fluttering through the woods. We had a fashion show when everyone showed off their costumes. Patricia and Donal were there and I think they had a very happy day. They gave us lots of jellies and there were refreshments in the hall for adults. Tara and Hannah did the face painting – and did a good job! We all had an absolutely brilliant day just like Mark would have wanted us to have!

Blog For Training

Blog for training

Since September 1st we have had great trainers for football and hurling. We have had Darren the football coach and Bosco the hurling coach. Bosco would sometimes do a few drills with us like hitting the ball back and forth while running. Bosco often would go straight into a match. The teams would be Ardrahan vs Ballindereen. Ardrahan would usually win. Darren is the football coach he sometimes gives us a really tricky drill before a match. The drill would be something like running ten yards without dropping the ball. I know it sounds super easy but believe me it’s hard. When we finally complete the drill he will let us have a match. In my opinion the drills are the best.  Kiltiernan NS really appreciates Bosco and Darren’s efforts.

Science Week 2016: Erupting Volcano

Science Week

To celebrate Science Week 2016 we did science experiments in our classroom. I was in a group with Ava and Adam. We did the experiment ‘Erupting Volcano’.

Our equipment included:

  • A plastic bottle
  • Newspaper
  • A tray
  • Bicarbonate of Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food Colouring(for effect)
  • Washing Up Liquid(for effect)
  • Stones
  • Paint
  • Mini-Figures(optional)

Method:

  1. Firstly, place down the bottle on the tray.
  2. Carefully pour the vinegar into the bottle. Screw on the cap!
  3. Cover the bottle in newspaper. Try to shape it like a volcano.
  4. Paint the Volcano and place stones around the outside. You can also use mini-figures.
  5. Put in a few drops of food colouring and a squirt of washing up liquid.
  6. Put in a few spoons of bicarbonate of soda. Hey Presto! Your volcano should explode.

Why?

The volcano exploded due to the reaction between the vinegar and the bicarbonate of soda creating carbon dioxide and bubbles.

Result

I really enjoyed making this volcano. I would give it 8/10.

3D printer

3D printer

A man called Noel Murphy brought in a 3D printer he works as a computer technologist.

He firstly showed us a video of his business flying a 100 Drones lighting with music being played by an orchestra.

Then he brought us out to the 3D printer and explained how it worked. When he was finished talking about the 3d printer he said he would pass around an elephant that he printed once.

When everyone had passed it around, he said he would print a whistle. It took an hour and twenty minutes to do. The whistle worked really well. It was a very interesting visit.

3-D Printer

3-D Printer

On the 18th of November a man called Noel Murphy came in to school and told us all about a 3-D printer. Noel told us how some companies are starting to print Drones and how Domino’s Pizza has started using them to deliver their pizzas. He also showed us a video of how people light up some drones to music. Then we went into the halla and got to see a 3-d printer. Noel was telling us how the printer works and what it could make and he also brought in some examples which were an elephant, a little robot and some bricks. Then He said that he would print us a whistle. Later that day it was done and we had an assembly. Daniel was the first to test it.
