On Tuesday the 15th of March it was Proclamation Day. Tom O’ Doherty, retired principal and local historian, came to our school. Tom talked about the 1916 Rising which was very interesting. He told us about Castle Taylor and the Shaw Taylor family, the landlords. Tom also read out the 1916 Proclamation. Oisín, Ava, Abbie, Emma and Adam read out our new proclamation then Ms. Leech’s classroom played Amhráin na bhFiann on the tin whistle. During our singing James the oldest pupil and Daniel our youngest pupil in the school raised the Irish flag. It was a simple and short ceremony to celebrate and event which happened one hundred years ago. Ms. Fenlon told us that this moment was a once in a lifetime event so it was very special. This is how we celebrated the memory of 1916 Rising.

When the army from Renmore Barracks came to our school to present the Irish tricolour and the 1916 Proclamation, they told us that we were to make our own Proclamation like every other school in Ireland. So we created our own Proclamation with everyone’s names at the bottom of it.
On Proclamation day Tom O’Doherty Ms O’Doherty’s dad told us stories of the 1916 rising in Galway. He told us about Liam Mellows and his army and more. Next, we went out to raise the flag and play “Amhrán na bhFíann” on the tin whistle. Tom O’Doherty read out the original proclamation and a few of us read out paragraphs of our school Proclamation.
Soon after that we took our picture class by class with the Irish flag and our own Proclamation. It was a historic and proud day.

Since the start of the school year our school has been working on a garden to celebrate the Easter 1916 rising.
Ms Fenlon planned a lot of the garden and spent a lot of time working on it. On Friday the 11th of March we opened our garden. Our parents and guests came to our school to open our garden. Anne Rabbitte, Ciaran Cannon and Sean Canney attended our opening.
UTV Ireland’s news reporter came to our school with Anne Rabbitte to take a few clips. Our garden has seven standing stones- each one of them represents a signatory that signed the proclamation. It’s decorated with beautiful flowers and small shrubs. In the middle is a plaque that’s say ‘cherishing all the children of the nation equally’.
We played three tunes on the tin whistle. We played Amhrain Na bhFiain, Inis Oirr and Galway Bay. David Ceannt opened our garden by cutting the ribbon. When he cut the ribbon we read our school proclamation. Finally we sang Amhrain na bhFian and hoisted our national flag. It was a day to remember.
