Camogie final!!!

Camogie final!!!

For the past few months, the Kiltiernan Camogie team have been hard at work practising with our dedicated coaches Paul and Ann.

In the first rounds of the Cumann Na mbunscoil championships, the girls succeeded in winning all of their matches. They played three fellow school Camogie teams, including Ballyglass, Gort and Kilchreest. They played magnificently in each of the games, and went straight through to the second round of the championships.

After a few more hard weeks training, the girls were finally ready to go. The championship finals took place on the 14th of June, in Lochgeorge pitch.

We arrived early, in order to prepare for the game. We played a mini match to get warmed up. Eventually, the clock struck 12, and it was time to play. We all had butterflies in our stomachs and we were very nervous.

We played Ballymacward. We were winning at half time, but unfortunately at the end of the second half, it turned out to be a draw.

Yet again, we ended up having to play extra time, with three minutes a half. At half time, we were up two points, and managed to score two goals, and a point in the second half.

At the end of the game, we started celebrating, as we knew we had won, but unfortunately, the other team were convinced that it had been a draw.

There was lots of discussion between the two teams and the referee over the score, but in the end, we ended up having to play golden score.

Golden score is where the first team to score a goal or point wins. Unfortunately, Ballymacward scored the first point of the game, leaving the Kiltiernan team distraught.

We were all very upset, but we were all very proud of how well we had played as a team on the day.

We would like to thank our managers Paul and Ann for all their hard work and dedication over the past two years. We have learned so much more about Camogie from them, especially the importance of working as a team, and that is the reason we came so far.

Visits

Visits

There were many visits to the school in term 3, including a Paramedic visits, a Garda visit and an Archaeologist visit. They all taught are many interesting things about their everyday jobs.

Paramedic Visit

On the 15th of June two paramedics Mossy and Paul came to our school. They firstly came inside and told us what they do. They are based in Ennis Hospital. They cover the regions of Galway, Clare and Limerick they told us. They we walked outside to see the ambulance. We took turns to see Brendan heart rate. We came out the side door of the ambulance to see stretchers and neck support. When it was my turn with the neck support I walked over to the stretchers and lay down on the stretcher. It looked like I had broken my neck! After I went over the other side of the ambulance. They let try on their coat and hop in the front seat of the ambulance. I dreamt that I was a first responder and on the scene to an emergency. When we were going inside they turned on the siren. It made a really loud noise. The paramedics were really kind and I would love them to visit again.

Garda Visit

Not only did we have a paramedic visit we also had a Garda visit. On the 23rd of May Garda Philip and Garda Aoife came to all the classrooms. Phillip went to Senior room and Aoife went to the Junior room. They were going to meet up in the Middle Room. Phillip talked to us about fingerprints. He told us how they were made. Then we did some in investigating. We split up into groups. Everyone in the group printed their fingerprints. The culprit printed his finger twice. We swapped with other groups. They had to identify who the culprit. I taught it was really fun trying to guess other peoples fingerprint. I would like thank Aoife and Phillip for coming.

Archaeologist visit

On the 23rd of June Jerry (Aly’s Dad) came to talk to us about Archaeology. He told about what archaeologists do every day. He told us the difference between archaeology and history. He showed us discoveries he has found. He showed aeriel views and drawings of the Ardrahan area. He showed many pictures of big digs that he has took part in. He discussed many ancient monuments that are either demolished or still standing. Thank you Jerry for visiting our school.

Paramedics visit

There were lots of visits this term and one of them was a visit from the two paramedics. They came on the 16th of June and their names were Mossey and Paul. First they talked to us about their job. They said they were based in Ennis hospital and that they come out in parts of Clare and Galway. They told us about their uniform and how long you would have to train for in order to become a paramedic. We asked them some interesting questions after. Next they brought us out to show us the ambulance. Brendan went into the ambulance bed and they brought us up in groups of four to show us and demonstrate how they would treat a real patient. They showed Brendan’s heart rate and breath on the screen next to him. They showed us some of the equipment inside the ambulance and outside the ambulance. They showed us some neck holders, helmets and leg holders. Then they turned on the siren of the ambulance. It was very loud!

Gardaí visit

On the 23rd of May, Philip and Aoife the Gardaí came to our school. Philip came to the senior room and he told us about fingerprints and that every fingerprint is unique. We split up into groups of eight. Philip put down some ink and rolled it on glass and we all had to put down our thumbs on the ink and put it down on the bottom of a page. Then one of us had to be the culprit and put another fingerprint on the top. After that we switched the page around and the other groups had to work out who was the culprit. Later Philip showed us his pepper spray and batons and how they used them to protect themselves. Aoife spoke to the middle room about safety and her job.

Archaeologist visit

On the 23rd of June Jerry came to talk to us about archaeology. He showed us a PowerPoint on archaeology and he talked to us about what archaeologists do and discoveries in the area. This included a round tower near the church of Ireland and a big fort around Ardrahan village. He also talked to us about caves and that the bear bones at the Aillwee cave had sharp edges on it from spears which mean it could have been killed by early people! He said that if a motorway had to be built the archaeologists would have to search there in case there would be something of interest from our history.

Junior Room Term 3

Junior Room Term 3

Summer has arrived and we’ve had a very busy term so far.

In Gaeilge, we learned all about Eadaí and An Aimsir. We learned all about Weight, Capacity and Length in Maths. Mr. Kelly taught us for three weeks and he taught us loads of new songs and chants. Ask me to sing ‘Bungalow’ for you!

First Class has completed their swimming module this year and Infants learned about water safety on the farm, on the beach, at the pool, at home and on waterways.

This term brought lots of interesting visits and trips away.

Garda Aoife Curley, Daniel’s mum came in to talk to our class about the job of being a Guard. She told us all about the different ways the Guards patrol the roads, waters and skies around Ireland. She showed us her truncheon and belt Seán got to handcuff Ms. O Doherty and everyone laughed!

She asked us to be Seatbelt Sheriffs in the car over the summer months so we can all stay safe while travelling.

Daniel’s dad Paul is a paramedic and he is coming in to show us what is involved in his job and maybe we might even see the inside of an ambulance too.

We all took part in a Walk a Mile for Mark in Ballinderreen pitch on the 22nd of May. We had lots of fun and met up with our friends. We especially remembered our friend Mark that day and every day and always smile when we talk about him in school.

Later in May, we went on the bus to Galway Education Centre where we were presented with a certificate and medal for participating in the Write a Book competition. We are all published authors and are very proud of our books.  Bernard and the staff even gave us a goodie bag as we were leaving, it was great fun.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, we then went along to Galway Barracks where Soldier Seamus talked to us about the peace keeping missions that they go on. The soldiers showed us the different types of weapons used and even let us hold them and take some cool pictures with them. We saw where the army men and women lived, trained and ate. Seamus then showed us a truck and jeep used by the army in Ireland. We’ll never forget that trip.

Sports Day will be on Friday the 10th of June. The Middle and Senior Rooms have been weighing us on their backs and booking us up for the piggy back races!! We can’t wait!

New infants will come in for their first taste of ‘big school’ on the 20th of June from 9.30-11.30. We’ll feel really grown up that day I think!

Ice Cream Day in aid of Downs Syndrome Ireland will be on the 23rd of June.

The Junior Room will be going to Loughwell Farm on the 28th of June for our school tour. Activities there will include seeing animals, riding the go-karts and barrel train, building some massive creations in the sand pit and of course, going down the massive slide and bouncy castle!

Our Magnificent May birthday boys are Marlon and Matthew Heffernan. Our only June Jewel is Emily and she is 7.

Ella and Sophia are July Jelly babies and Awesome August birthday boys are Aidan and Nathan. Happy birthday to you all!

It has been a very eventful year. I would like to thank the parents for all the hard work and support this year. We appreciate everything you’ve done for the children, school and staff and wish you a very sunny and happy summer. See you all in September!
