Sports day 2016

Sports day 2016

On the 10th of June 2016 we had our annual sports day. To start off we had the sprint. It was from one goals to the other. Junior Infants – 6th class took part in every race during the day. We also had the long distance race which was a little bit harder because we had to run three laps around the pitch. We were puffed out after that one!

The  three legged race wasn’t as hard but it was much funnier because people kept falling over. Sixth class went as one huge 9 legged team but half way through they all fell over. Sadly half way through the day it started raining. That didn’t stop us but we had to abandon the wheel barrow race and the piggy back race and replaced them with a penalty shootout. Everyone got a shot.

The junior and senior infants  played with the hoola hoops and with an  obstacle course on the small pitch. It was a great day for everyone and I can’t wait for next year!

School Athletics Dangan 2016

School Athletics Dangan 2016

On the 24th of May some of children from Kiltiernan School were excited because we were going to the Dangan for the County School Athletics. We all arrived in Dangan at 9.30am. We started with a warm up. The first event was the U9 400 metres. Iarla won his heat and got through to the final. Next up was the U11 400 metres. Stephen got through to the final.

After the middle distance heats were the sprints. Orlaith was running first. She got through to the semi-finals. So did David and Abbie. Sean C, John and Sean S were unlucky not to get out of their heats.

Later was the U9 400 metres final. Iarla ran very well but didn’t feature in the medals.  Next came the U11 400 metres. Stephen ran a super race and won a gold medal! Well done Stephen!

Now it was time for the sprint semi-finals. Abbie, David and Orlaith got to the final. Then it was the finals time. First Orlaith won gold, next David won gold. Subsequently Abbie won a silver medal. We were all very proud of our achievements! We all really enjoyed our day at Dangan and we were all justifiably proud of our performances.

Rounders Workshop

Rounders Workshop

On the 23rd of June 2016, Louise came to our school. She did a rounders work shop with all the classes. In the junior room Louise brought in a stand to put the balls on it. This is called Mini Rounders. They would hit the ball and run to all the basses. At the end of the session we took a picture of the class. They had great fun.

In the middle room the 2nd and 3rd classes went out to do the rounders. They started with a warm up called “Beat the Ball”. Louise would throw a ball to the bases and a person would try to beat the ball around the 4 bases. To finish off they had a short match.

4th class was next. They started off with the same exercise “Beat the Ball”.  After that they did a rounders game. They had fun.

In the afternoon it was 5th and 6th turn. We did the same drill. We played “Beat the Ball”. Then we did a very competitive game of rounders! We all enjoyed and we high fived each other at the end. It was a great day! We would like to thank Louise to putting her day into teaching us rounders!

Pro 12 trophy visit to kiltiernan

Pro 12 trophy visit to kiltiernan

On Tuesday 21st of June the pro 12 trophy came to our school. We all wore our Connacht jerseys to welcome it to our school. We all got pictures with the trophy. Linden Jones, Tom Finneran and Magealla Piggot brought the trophy with them and told us about the blood, sweat and tears they put in to achieve the trophy. They promoted the Gort gladiators rugby club. I really enjoyed it because I am a big fan of Connacht rugby.

Goodbye Ms Tuohy

Goodbye Ms Tuohy

Today on the 27th of June we sadly said goodbye to one of our kindest teachers, Ms Tuohy. She announced that she will not return to Kiltiernan N.S. for the next school year. We were all sad that she would be leaving us but we all knew that we would make Ms Tuohy’s last teaching day’s happy ones. We made her a card. The theme for the card was gardens. We used markers, glitter, flowers and hearts. The card looked amazing. Everyone thought the pupils who helped with the card did a brilliant job.

We had an assembly as well. We presented the cards to Ms Tuohy there. She loved them! On behalf of the staff from Kiltiernan, Ms Tuohy was also presented with a gift.I think Ms Tuohy had a lovely time with us because we had a great time with here. Everyone here wishes that Ms Tuohy will have a great time at the new school that she is going to. We hope we will keep in touch and stay friends forever.

Graduation

Graduation

On Wednesday the 22nd of June we had our graduation for sixth class and Oisín and Tara Keane. We celebrated this graduation with a mass service, songs by the choir, memories and the releasing of the balloons.

We opened the ceremony with a song. Directly afterwards, each of us brought forward an item representing our time at Kiltiernan such as; a hurl, a jersey, a soccer ball, a class novel, art supplies, a tin whistle, a laptop, an Irish flag, a script from a school play and finally a science project.

This was followed by an opening prayer from Fr. Roche, readings by Abbie and Jake and solo songs from Molly, Chloe and Ellie. Next Ber Brady read a poem entitled ‘A parents’ prayer’. The intercessions followed, read by students of our school, including graduates Aoibhe, James and John. A hymn from the choir closed the prayer service.

Fr. Roche, from the Board of Management, gave an address to the congregation. Next Jake read a piece of his memories from Kiltiernan. After yet, another song, Ms Fenlon presented attendance certificates to students who only missed four or less days this year. Next it was Ms. Leech’s turn to talk about her memories of each of us. In advance, she had spoken with all other students and teachers about their memories of us.

In turn we each stood up in front of everybody as Ms. Leech let out the truth- funny stories, embarrassing tales and everything our friends associated with us were shared. Next, more memories were shared from Chloe and Molly followed by two more songs from the choir ‘The party goes on’ and ‘Let it be’. Four sixth class pupils sang solos in the final song.

Finally the graduates led the way outside to sing ‘The spirit of God’ and traditionally let off the famous balloons. Everyone enjoyed the graduation and will dearly miss the happy times in Kiltiernan.
