Tommy Baker’s Puppet Show

On Tuesday the 24th of October 2017, Tommy Baker made a visit to all of the pupils and staff of Kiltiernan NS. We all gathered in the hall. He performed the show of the ‘Salmon of Knowledge’. It was about Fionn  Mc Cumhail and Finnegas, who owned the Salmon of Knowledge. The puppets looked amazing. He did one other show for 3rd class up. It was played by handmade puppets. They were made from wood. It was a wonderful show. It was a great way to spend one afternoon!!!

CHRISTMAS CARDS

Every year in our school we make Christmas cards. We get a piece of paper to draw on and we draw what we’d want on the front of our Christmas cards. Then we send them out to get printed. About a week later we get our Christmas cards back. We can get cards with our picture on the front or teddies with t-shirts that have our pictures on them. We always have great fun making our cards. Everybody made great cards. I can’t wait to make them again next year!

Grandparents Day at Kiltiernan N.S

On the 6th of October Kiltiernan celebrated Grandparents’ Day by inviting them to our school. On Grandparents’ Day it was very exciting. All the students made sure the hálla was decorated in interviews, drawings and many other projects all made by us children.

When they arrived the grandparents were invited to take a seat in the hálla.

Ms Leech made a heart-warming speech talking about how much we appreciate our grandparents coming and the happiness of us kids when we see them.

Mr O Doherty came in and talked to us about old artefacts such as and old schoolbag, and old doll, a foot warmer and even a coat of arms used in the Battle of Aughrim which took place in 1691. There was also an old receipt and a curling tongs holder.

We then sang our hearts out and brought back our grandparent’s memories by singing songs that they might have heard when they were young.

Soon after we went back to our classrooms and asked questions about our grandparent’s lives. It was very interesting.

I think Grandparents’ Day was a big success with everyone!

Grease

We went to see Grease in Kilcornan on Thursday the 16th of November which was produced and staged by Seamount Secondary School.

It was great fun seeing all the older boys and girls dress up and sing and dance their hearts out. We saw a few past pupils on stage and thought about how much we’re going to love being on stage in the near future!

Origami Workshop

For Science Week, we were lucky enough to have a workshop on the skills of Origami. Tom showed some samples of shapes that he had folded and explained the role of Origami in Maths, Science and Engineering.

He showed the class how to create an ancient Japanese envelope and after, we made lovely birds too. It was very educational and great fun too.

Liam McCarthy Visit

We were delighted to welcome the Liam McCarthy cup to the school on the 21st of November. We were all dressed up in Galway gear and we were honoured to touch, take pictures with and ask questions to the members of the panel.

In School this Term

Our class has been having great fun learning music from the 1960s this term. We have so far learned ‘California Dreamin’, With a Little Help From my Friends’ and Happy Together’. We could provide great Christmas entertainment this year!! Lots more trips down memory lane to come next year!

We will be continuing to practice for the Christmas Choral Evening with Ms. Fenlon and we have a nice surprise song planned for you.

We have recently being doing lots of Bar Graphs and charts in Maths. We have also studied multiplication in 4th, addition, time, fractions and lots more.

Only a few more sleeps til you know what!!!!

Coffee Morning

Coffee morning

On the 21st of September Kiltiernan N.S held their coffee morning for the Galway hospice. We had loads of sweet treats such as buns, cakes, cookies and many more. Pupils were asked to bake and bring in as many cakes and buns as possible. My nana and I baked treacle cake. It was delicious. Lagan Construction supported us all the with the coffee morning. Outside the gates of the school we had ‘a coffee to go’ table so if you didn’t want to come in you could stop get a coffee and hit the road fast! At the end of the busy day all our pupils got little goody bags full of jellies and crisps. We raised about 900 Euro for the Hospice which is a great cause. By Adam 6th Class

Grease Lighting

Grease Lightning

On the 16th of November 2017 kiltiernan N.s went to see Seamount’s production of grease lightning. We got on a bus at 10 o’clock in the morning. We took the five minute journey to Kilcornan hall. The play started off with two groups singing – a group of boys and a group of girls. The main character was a girl named sandy. She was new and didn’t have many friends. The play was very good at moving from scene to scene. They even had an old car that was stripped down as Grease Lightning. It had no wheels and they painted it themselves. There was a lot of singing with songs including ‘Summer Loving’. They could do the American accent very well. It was very cool with all the LED lights and flashing lights .. My favourite part was at the start when the light shone on the group of boys- the girls would stop talking and moving and if it shone on the girls the boys would stop moving and talking. I thought it was very good. They were all good at what they did including the adults and teachers because it must have taken ages to rehearse and get it perfect. I was sitting beside a huge sound system with loads of buttons and dials. There was also a setup behind that; this one was used to control the lights. At the end of the performance all the performers stood at the front of the stage and took a bow to a standing ovation. We had a great morning.

Singing

Singing

This Term at kiltiernan N.S we are singing 60’s music. We are singing the music for our own enjoyment. We have sang songs such as…….

Happy together-The Turtles

California dreaming-The Mamas & the Papas

With a little help from my friends – The Beatles

Golden Slumbers-The Beatles

For California dreaming as some of you know the mamas and the papas featured two boys and two girls so Ms O Doherty came up with the idea of sending up two boys and two girls and the rest of the class sang the seconds.

We came up with the idea of Golden Slumbers from the new John Lewis ad on YouTube as our next project for Christmas. It is second on the trending list. We practice these songs on Tuesday every week.

I really enjoy doing these songs every week and look forward to it!

Tom Cuffe’s Origami Workshop

Origami Workshop

On the 17th of November for science week Tom Cuffe, an origami expert came to teach us the art of origami. Origami is the art of folding paper. Firstly, Tom showed us his bird origami. Tom is also a birdwatcher and ties in origami and birds together. He made beautiful swans, eagles and cranes. Next he showed us his large origami collection such a massive cube and a batman mask. The batman was life-size meaning you could put it on your face! Next, Tom taught us how to make an ancient Chinese envelope. He said paper was expensive so they made the letter and the envelope in the one piece of paper. Secondly we made a tetrahedron. You use two small pieces of paper and combine them together. Finally, we finished by using six business cards to create an origami cube. Over break Toby made a level two cube, a bigger cube. He used twenty small cubes. I would like to thank Tom for an amazing workshop and I really enjoyed it.

Pantomime

The pantomime was on the 7th of April. We spent a long time preparing for the big night. Everyone’s adrenaline was pumping. You could feel the excitement.

First 5th and 6th class did their Irish dancing followed by 2nd-4th class` play called “Jack and the beanstalk”. Without delay they did their Irish dancing.  Shortly afterwards the 5th-6th class` play “Alas in Blunderland” took to the stage. They both had jokes and both as good as each other. But then the night sadly had to come to an end.

If you missed the play you can go on YouTube and find the whole night’s entertainment. We all had a great time.

Seashore Safari

Seashore Safari

On the 24th of May the pupils from second to sixth of Kiltiernan national school were lucky enough to be visited by Brendan Allard from the Marine Institute. Brendan is a marine biologist and works in the marine institute in Renvile. He studies creatures in the ocean.

He came to visit us around 9:30am in the morning. We all gathered into the hall and he explained to us what he does at his work. He also told us how important it was to protect the oceans from pollution.

We left for Traught beach shortly afterwards seeing as low tide was at 10:30 which was when we wanted to arrive. When we got off the bus we split into groups and he gave us all nets. We spent the next hour and a half scouring the rock pools for any signs of life!

By the time we were finished we had found hermit, porcelain, edible, shore and box crabs, though our star find of the day was a butterfish. We also found anemones and periwinkles.

After that we had a quick lunch break and then we finished off the day with a sandcastle building competition.

We all had a great day and at the same time we learned about the ocean and found lots of cool creatures. We can’t wait for another visit from the marine institute!

Credit Union Prize Giving

Credit Union Prize Giving

On the 28th of November, Orlaith and I went to the Gort Credit Union to be presented with a prize!

One day Ms Fenlon announced that there was a drawing competition for the Credit Union. It took me a long while before I was finished and I never thought I would be going to Gort for a mystery prize!

I walked in to the Gort Credit Union to hear a lady offering a sweet. I couldn’t see Orlaith yet. I looked at the other drawings. (Still no Orlaith!) Then they were going to present our age group and Orlaith came. I came 2nd and Orlaith came 1st! We both got a black and a card. As soon as we got them we opened them. Inside was a voucher for the Gort Educational World shop. Mum said that I could spend it at Christmas but I’m sure I will spend it sooner than that!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Yesterday, the 24th of November 2016 Deirdre visited our classroom. Deirdre’s job is a graphic designer. She is also a good friend of Ms. O’Doherty. She designs posters, book covers, logos and website designs. Deirdre told us about a regular day on her work shift. She would normally begin with meetings in the morning where her colleagues share their ideas. Then they would also do some sketches for their clients who want a logo or a website designs. Then they would present it to the client and then to the world! Right now Deirdre is working on Christmas eir DMs (daily mailings). Deirdre said that they used sharpies to do some sketches to see how they would plan it. Deirdre said that they do the final design on computer.

She joined our art lesson. We were doing winter pictures with our teacher Ms. Fenlon. She showed us how to work with chalk pastels and drew a house, a tree, a fence, some swirls to represent the wind and the sky as an example. Deirdre drew the lamp posts and gave the sky some finishing touches! When we started our winter pictures. Ms. Fenlon and Deirdre pointed out to us that we should start with the background using lighter colours and build up to the darker colours in the foreground. Every once in a while something would be added to the picture on the white board. Deirdre asked us if we would like to have her job as a Graphic Designer. Everybody put their hand up, and that’s twenty-eight kids! We all love art!
