Singing

Singing

This Term at kiltiernan N.S we are singing 60’s music. We are singing the music for our own enjoyment. We have sang songs such as…….

Happy together-The Turtles

California dreaming-The Mamas & the Papas

With a little help from my friends – The Beatles

Golden Slumbers-The Beatles

For California dreaming as some of you know the mamas and the papas featured two boys and two girls so Ms O Doherty came up with the idea of sending up two boys and two girls and the rest of the class sang the seconds.

We came up with the idea of Golden Slumbers from the new John Lewis ad on YouTube as our next project for Christmas. It is second on the trending list. We practice these songs on Tuesday every week.

I really enjoy doing these songs every week and look forward to it!

Tom Cuffe’s Origami Workshop

Origami Workshop

On the 17th of November for science week Tom Cuffe, an origami expert came to teach us the art of origami. Origami is the art of folding paper. Firstly, Tom showed us his bird origami. Tom is also a birdwatcher and ties in origami and birds together. He made beautiful swans, eagles and cranes. Next he showed us his large origami collection such a massive cube and a batman mask. The batman was life-size meaning you could put it on your face! Next, Tom taught us how to make an ancient Chinese envelope. He said paper was expensive so they made the letter and the envelope in the one piece of paper. Secondly we made a tetrahedron. You use two small pieces of paper and combine them together. Finally, we finished by using six business cards to create an origami cube. Over break Toby made a level two cube, a bigger cube. He used twenty small cubes. I would like to thank Tom for an amazing workshop and I really enjoyed it.

Pantomime

The pantomime was on the 7th of April. We spent a long time preparing for the big night. Everyone’s adrenaline was pumping. You could feel the excitement.

First 5th and 6th class did their Irish dancing followed by 2nd-4th class` play called “Jack and the beanstalk”. Without delay they did their Irish dancing.  Shortly afterwards the 5th-6th class` play “Alas in Blunderland” took to the stage. They both had jokes and both as good as each other. But then the night sadly had to come to an end.

If you missed the play you can go on YouTube and find the whole night’s entertainment. We all had a great time.

Seashore Safari

Seashore Safari

On the 24th of May the pupils from second to sixth of Kiltiernan national school were lucky enough to be visited by Brendan Allard from the Marine Institute. Brendan is a marine biologist and works in the marine institute in Renvile. He studies creatures in the ocean.

He came to visit us around 9:30am in the morning. We all gathered into the hall and he explained to us what he does at his work. He also told us how important it was to protect the oceans from pollution.

We left for Traught beach shortly afterwards seeing as low tide was at 10:30 which was when we wanted to arrive. When we got off the bus we split into groups and he gave us all nets. We spent the next hour and a half scouring the rock pools for any signs of life!

By the time we were finished we had found hermit, porcelain, edible, shore and box crabs, though our star find of the day was a butterfish. We also found anemones and periwinkles.

After that we had a quick lunch break and then we finished off the day with a sandcastle building competition.

We all had a great day and at the same time we learned about the ocean and found lots of cool creatures. We can’t wait for another visit from the marine institute!

Credit Union Prize Giving

Credit Union Prize Giving

On the 28th of November, Orlaith and I went to the Gort Credit Union to be presented with a prize!

One day Ms Fenlon announced that there was a drawing competition for the Credit Union. It took me a long while before I was finished and I never thought I would be going to Gort for a mystery prize!

I walked in to the Gort Credit Union to hear a lady offering a sweet. I couldn’t see Orlaith yet. I looked at the other drawings. (Still no Orlaith!) Then they were going to present our age group and Orlaith came. I came 2nd and Orlaith came 1st! We both got a black and a card. As soon as we got them we opened them. Inside was a voucher for the Gort Educational World shop. Mum said that I could spend it at Christmas but I’m sure I will spend it sooner than that!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Yesterday, the 24th of November 2016 Deirdre visited our classroom. Deirdre’s job is a graphic designer. She is also a good friend of Ms. O’Doherty. She designs posters, book covers, logos and website designs. Deirdre told us about a regular day on her work shift. She would normally begin with meetings in the morning where her colleagues share their ideas. Then they would also do some sketches for their clients who want a logo or a website designs. Then they would present it to the client and then to the world! Right now Deirdre is working on Christmas eir DMs (daily mailings). Deirdre said that they used sharpies to do some sketches to see how they would plan it. Deirdre said that they do the final design on computer.

She joined our art lesson. We were doing winter pictures with our teacher Ms. Fenlon. She showed us how to work with chalk pastels and drew a house, a tree, a fence, some swirls to represent the wind and the sky as an example. Deirdre drew the lamp posts and gave the sky some finishing touches! When we started our winter pictures. Ms. Fenlon and Deirdre pointed out to us that we should start with the background using lighter colours and build up to the darker colours in the foreground. Every once in a while something would be added to the picture on the white board. Deirdre asked us if we would like to have her job as a Graphic Designer. Everybody put their hand up, and that’s twenty-eight kids! We all love art!

SCIENCE WEEK: VISIT FROM NOEL MURPHY

SCIENCE WEEK:

VISIT FROM NOEL MURPHY

During Science Week a man called Noel Murphy who works for Intel came to our school with a 3D printer. First he showed us a really cool video of the future of fireworks. There were lots of musicians playing in an orchestra and instead of fireworks they were using drones. They made different shapes and at the end it made the word Intel in a speech bubble. It was so cool.

Then he brought us into the halla and showed us the actual 3D printer. He used the printer to make us a referee’s whistle. It took about two hours to print the whistle so it worked while we went back to class and we saw the finished product later that day. He also showed us a sample of other different things made on the printer. One of the samples he showed us was of an elephant. He asked us how we thought it worked to print it. He explained 3D printing works by using melted plastic instead of ink and by building the piece up with the melted plastic layer by layer.

He then asked how we think making the whistle would work because of the ball inside of it. How do you get the ball inside the whistle? Someone answered by saying that you make the ball and then make the other bit beside it and put the ball inside of it. But the 3D printer can’t do that. Then I said that you make it layer by layer so you make the bottom of the whistle then the ball on a tiny post stuck to the base of it then close off the top of it. I was right!

The other materials you can use in a 3D printer are plastic, metals, glass and even chocolate! The products you can make are toys, body armour, helmets etc. You can even make body parts like ears noses and organs! The most interesting fact I learned is that you can construct everything layer by layer. The drones shown in the PowerPoint show was so cool because the drones were moving to the music and it showed how they showed the word ‘Intel’.

I enjoyed Noel’s visit a lot and I hope he comes back again.

K.N.S.: The Competitions We Are Entering

K.N.S.: The Competitions We Are Entering

In Kiltiernan N.S. we enter lots of competitions. The middle room competed in the Gort Credit Union’s poster competition. The theme was ‘dreams are made of this’. I drew a pig flying over a rainbow and a seal with a patterned ball on its nose.

We also did the Ireland’s Own short story competition. It had a limit of 400 to 1,000 words. There were 5 topics. The topics were A Day Minding Grandad, Down the Back Of the Sofa, The Expensive Dress, A Letter from Mars and My School after Dark. I did A Day Minding Grandad. We all did it. We have until Halloween to finish. I have finished mine, but not everyone has.

We also entered a school competition on Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show. It was to win €1,000 for your school. We had to write about why our school is so special and what we would use the money for. Unfortunately we didn’t win.

Anyway, we entered the I.C.A. (Irish Countrywomen’s Association) Halloween short story competition. We had to make it spooky but not too spooky!

We competed in athletics cross country competition. 2 of the 6 people we sent got near first place. The rest came around the middle. We do a lot of competitions in 2nd 3rd and 4th class.

All About The Science Of Sound!

All About The Science Of Sound!

Today, on the 22nd of November Dr Naomi Lavelle visited our school. She is a scientist and she told us all about the science of sound!

We hear sound with the inside of our ears. Sound travels through the air as something called ‘sound waves’. Dr Naomi taught us how different sounds can be used in different ways.

In her first experiment she had two balloons. Inside one there was a 1 cent coin. In the other there was a ‘hex nut’. It is the nut which you put on a screw. She spun the balloons round and round and they each created a different sound.  Although the hex nut was smaller it created a louder sound. Before we knew this we guessed which object would create the louder sound. I guessed the hex nut would make the noisier sound and I was right!

The next experiment was made using a plastic cup, a paperclip and a wet string. There was one small hole in the bottom of the cup which was there for the string to go through. The paperclip was outside the hole and stopped the string falling through the cup. When you squeezed down the string while it was wet it made a sound like a duck or even something very rude! This happened when the string was being pulled it made the cup, the paperclip and the sound waves vibrating in the air inside the cup shake which made the strange noise.

For the next experiment Naomi did the same thing but       with different sized containers. Six volunteers came up and took a container each and in turn they squeezed and pulled the string. We observed and listened to the sound each made. We decided which container made the lowest, deepest noise. We learned the deepest sound was made with a long container, better still with a bit of cardboard and a bit of wood. I think Liam won the ‘deepest sound’ with his but there were some very deep sounds!

We had a great visit from Dr Naomi and we learned lots about the science of sound from her! She’s so good and she even has her own website. Check her out on sciencewows.ie! My most interesting fact was that the science of sound could be used in wars as a weapon! I am really glad she came to visit!
