Pantomime Preparation

Pantomime Preparation

On the Seventh of April 2017 Kilteirnan National School will be doing two plays from the senior class room and the middle class room.

The senior classroom will be doing the play ‘alas in blunderland’ while the middle room will do ‘Jack and the beanstalk’.

I will be telling you all about the preparation for the play!

The first thing that we did was our teachers gave us a script of the play for each desk.

We would get to read any line we desired if given permission via the teacher.

We read the scripts over and over again in class whenever we had time.

After we read the script at least ten times our teacher told us to write down three of four roles that we would want. We wrote the roles in the order of which one we wanted most and least.

The next day the teacher called out each role for each person.

Some kids got two or three roles. Others got only one. It depends on how many lines they have. (personally I have two)

From there on every day we would go into the halla and rehearse.

For the first couple of days we were allowed to bring a script and read off all our lines as we acted. Then after a week or so we were no longer allowed to bring a script to rehearsals and would have to stand on the stage and act out all of our lines that we had learnt off by heart.

Next our teacher told us that we would have to bring in a prop that would help us “get into character” for example if you were the king you could bring in a crown or if you were an ugly sister you could bring in a wig.

I’m really excited for the play and I just know that it will be absolutely positively fantastic and amazing.

Dear Mairead McGuinness

My name is Erin. P.

I go to school at Kilteirnan National School.

For a couple of months now we have been trying to achieve the Blue Star Programme.

The blue star programme is a programme that engages kids to learn about the EU and how it works.

We’ve done a lot of different projects this school year.

I’ll list my favourites-

We did a power point on a part of European history. I did mine on how Europe got its name. You can see it if you visit.

We also did a word document on a European artist. I researched Michelangelo. We printed all of the word documents and stuck them on the walls of our hallway.

We also did a day where we each brought in a dish from countries in the EU.

I made a delicious Italian sandwich!

If you come to visit I might make and bring some! (hint, hint, please come to our school)

It would make the entire school and I very happy if you visited.

Our principal, Miss Leech says that you came to visit us in 2014 but I wasn’t here then. I came to Ireland during 2015 from Ecuador. I was born in America though.

Our classmates have at least twenty questions to ask you!

I hope that you come to visit!

With love,

Erin. P.

Pantomime preparation

Pantomime preparation

This year instead of our big Christmas play, we’re doing an even bigger pantomime. The senior class room (5th-6th) are doing “Alas in Blunderland” and the middle room (2nd-4th) are doing “Jack and the beanstalk. However I’m going to focus on the senior room.

We started practicing by reading the script. We read through it about 5 times. Then we wrote down the parts and gave them to our teacher. Then after about a day or two Ms cast the play. So we read our own parts. As soon as we learned our lines off by heart we started acting. I got the part of Mommy bear. It was my first choice. I was so excited.

Our play is a lot of fairy tales put together. That’s it, as I don’t want to give too much away.  The Pantomime is on the 7th of April. We can`t wait for the 7th.

Credit Union Quiz Winners

On Friday, January 27th,  we competed in the Credit Union Quiz in Sullivans Hotel, Gort. Our school was represented by two U11 and two U13 teams. We had been working hard on our quiz practice and were very excited to participate. All our teams scored very well on the night and one of our U13 teams proved victorious, winning by a 4 point margin. Well done to everyone involved.

*****UPDATE*****

On Sunday March 5th, we nervously made our way to The Salthill Hotel in Galway for Round 2 of the Credit Union quiz. First 2 teams to qualify to the national finals in Dublin. Fingers crossed. After a nail biting and pretty sensational tie-breaker we finished in 2nd place. Our confidence is growing daily as we are practicing so hard.

*****UPDATE*****

After a very early start we arrived at The RDS in Dublin on Sunday April 2nd. The whole set-up was very exciting and, if we’re honest, a little scary!! But, as we’d been practicing so hard we were confident. We were thrilled to meet the O’Donovan brothers from Skibberreen who are youth ambassadors for the Credit Union. They were so nice and we got our photo taken with them. They gave us a good pep talk. Then Aidan Power, the compare for the day, arrived on stage and we were ready to get started. The questions were difficult but very fair. We finished a very respectable 5th on the day out of 50 teams from all over the country. Our teachers and parents were very proud of us and we received a big congrats from Gort Credit Union also. Taking part in the school quiz was such a great experience and we hope next year will be as successful for our school.

Credit Union Prize Giving

Credit Union Prize Giving

On the 28th of November, Orlaith and I went to the Gort Credit Union to be presented with a prize!

One day Ms Fenlon announced that there was a drawing competition for the Credit Union. It took me a long while before I was finished and I never thought I would be going to Gort for a mystery prize!

I walked in to the Gort Credit Union to hear a lady offering a sweet. I couldn’t see Orlaith yet. I looked at the other drawings. (Still no Orlaith!) Then they were going to present our age group and Orlaith came. I came 2nd and Orlaith came 1st! We both got a black and a card. As soon as we got them we opened them. Inside was a voucher for the Gort Educational World shop. Mum said that I could spend it at Christmas but I’m sure I will spend it sooner than that!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Deirdre, Graphic Designer Came to Our Room!

Yesterday, the 24th of November 2016 Deirdre visited our classroom. Deirdre’s job is a graphic designer. She is also a good friend of Ms. O’Doherty. She designs posters, book covers, logos and website designs. Deirdre told us about a regular day on her work shift. She would normally begin with meetings in the morning where her colleagues share their ideas. Then they would also do some sketches for their clients who want a logo or a website designs. Then they would present it to the client and then to the world! Right now Deirdre is working on Christmas eir DMs (daily mailings). Deirdre said that they used sharpies to do some sketches to see how they would plan it. Deirdre said that they do the final design on computer.

She joined our art lesson. We were doing winter pictures with our teacher Ms. Fenlon. She showed us how to work with chalk pastels and drew a house, a tree, a fence, some swirls to represent the wind and the sky as an example. Deirdre drew the lamp posts and gave the sky some finishing touches! When we started our winter pictures. Ms. Fenlon and Deirdre pointed out to us that we should start with the background using lighter colours and build up to the darker colours in the foreground. Every once in a while something would be added to the picture on the white board. Deirdre asked us if we would like to have her job as a Graphic Designer. Everybody put their hand up, and that’s twenty-eight kids! We all love art!

SCIENCE WEEK: VISIT FROM NOEL MURPHY

SCIENCE WEEK:

VISIT FROM NOEL MURPHY

During Science Week a man called Noel Murphy who works for Intel came to our school with a 3D printer. First he showed us a really cool video of the future of fireworks. There were lots of musicians playing in an orchestra and instead of fireworks they were using drones. They made different shapes and at the end it made the word Intel in a speech bubble. It was so cool.

Then he brought us into the halla and showed us the actual 3D printer. He used the printer to make us a referee’s whistle. It took about two hours to print the whistle so it worked while we went back to class and we saw the finished product later that day. He also showed us a sample of other different things made on the printer. One of the samples he showed us was of an elephant. He asked us how we thought it worked to print it. He explained 3D printing works by using melted plastic instead of ink and by building the piece up with the melted plastic layer by layer.

He then asked how we think making the whistle would work because of the ball inside of it. How do you get the ball inside the whistle? Someone answered by saying that you make the ball and then make the other bit beside it and put the ball inside of it. But the 3D printer can’t do that. Then I said that you make it layer by layer so you make the bottom of the whistle then the ball on a tiny post stuck to the base of it then close off the top of it. I was right!

The other materials you can use in a 3D printer are plastic, metals, glass and even chocolate! The products you can make are toys, body armour, helmets etc. You can even make body parts like ears noses and organs! The most interesting fact I learned is that you can construct everything layer by layer. The drones shown in the PowerPoint show was so cool because the drones were moving to the music and it showed how they showed the word ‘Intel’.

I enjoyed Noel’s visit a lot and I hope he comes back again.

K.N.S.: The Competitions We Are Entering

K.N.S.: The Competitions We Are Entering

In Kiltiernan N.S. we enter lots of competitions. The middle room competed in the Gort Credit Union’s poster competition. The theme was ‘dreams are made of this’. I drew a pig flying over a rainbow and a seal with a patterned ball on its nose.

We also did the Ireland’s Own short story competition. It had a limit of 400 to 1,000 words. There were 5 topics. The topics were A Day Minding Grandad, Down the Back Of the Sofa, The Expensive Dress, A Letter from Mars and My School after Dark. I did A Day Minding Grandad. We all did it. We have until Halloween to finish. I have finished mine, but not everyone has.

We also entered a school competition on Today FM’s Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show. It was to win €1,000 for your school. We had to write about why our school is so special and what we would use the money for. Unfortunately we didn’t win.

Anyway, we entered the I.C.A. (Irish Countrywomen’s Association) Halloween short story competition. We had to make it spooky but not too spooky!

We competed in athletics cross country competition. 2 of the 6 people we sent got near first place. The rest came around the middle. We do a lot of competitions in 2nd 3rd and 4th class.

Mark’s Birthday

Mark’s Birthday

On the 7th of October 2016, it was Mark Fordham’s birthday. We had a big celebration at school! There was a bouncy castle, face painting and some treats for the kids that our wonderful parents council provided. We got to dress up in costumes of all the things Mark liked. Mark was 9 years old on that day. At big break, we got dressed into our costumes. I was a fairy fluttering through the woods. We had a fashion show when everyone showed off their costumes. Patricia and Donal were there and I think they had a very happy day. They gave us lots of jellies and there were refreshments in the hall for adults. Tara and Hannah did the face painting – and did a good job! We all had an absolutely brilliant day just like Mark would have wanted us to have!
