My name is Bríd Fenlon, Acting Principal of Kiltiernan N.S. We learned this morning of the untimely death of Mark Fordham, a 2nd Class pupil in our school. This is a terrible tragedy for the Fordham and extended family, our school and our community. We are deeply saddened by this event. Our sympathy and thoughts are with Mark’s family and friends. Mark will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to have known him. We have been in contact with Mark’s parents who have requested that we all understand their need for privacy at this time.
Our school has implemented our Critical Incident Management Plan. Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) have supported and advised our staff at this time. The school will be open on Monday and Tuesday in an effort to support our pupils and parents deal with this tragic event.
We ask that you respect the privacy of the family and the school community at this time.

On Tuesday the 8th of December, there was a surprise visit of two Galway Minor hurlers. Pupils of Kiltiernan N.S. were very excited. They brought the All-Ireland trophy along with them. Cianan Fahy and Liam Forde showed us their medals. We asked Cianan and Liam some questions about hurling and how they have to prepare. We sang a Christmas carol called “Snow Business” which they were very happy with. They even joined in on some of it! Sadly they had to leave at some stage to visit other schools, so it was time for us to say good bye. It was a very nice surprise on what was otherwise a normal school day. I hope they come again soon!!!
On the 8th of December , two members came to our school . If you didn’t watch the match , the Galway Minors won the All Ireland against were called Cianan Fahy and Liam Forde. They are both from Ardrahan. We met them in the hálla . When they were going down the hall we were cheering “Lets go Galway lets go”! I felt really excited as they walked in. So they firstly sat down on the seats. After, Mrs Fenlon gave a speech about how honoured we were for them to come here. She also spoke about the win against Tipperary. She Tipperary . The players that came to our school asked what it was like. They replied saying “a great win and everyone had done very well”. The teachers let us to ask questions. Some of the most popular questions were based on the topic training. Here is an example. “How many times do you train a week?” Or, “What sort of things do you do to train?” The answer to the first question was that they trained three times a week. The answer to the second question was they did most of the stuff we do to training but maybe a bit harder. That was some of the main questions. Also, we took a photo. Then we sang ‘ Snow Business ‘. The uestion highlight for me was seeing the cup for real! I had the best time ever!!!
Kiltiernan NS says Farewell to Super Secretary Bríd O’Sullivan
On Friday the 4th of December, the pupils, staff and some parents gathered in the Halla to wish Bríd O’Sullivan well in the next chapter of her life as her time with us has sadly came to an end. Brid O’Sullivan has worked here for just 13 months but in that time made a deep impression on the whole school community. Bríd (eile!) extended the school’s deep appreciation for all the work, good cheer, sudden hugs and Kerry wit she brought in her time here.
Brid Fenlon went on to speak about the qualities of ‘the perfect secretary’…Where would James Bond and Her Majesty’s Secret Service be without Moneypenny? Moneypenny is someone who can react calmly in any crisis…just like Bríd…The role of secretary in a school is very important because, on the phone a secretary is ‘like a voice hug’ for any concerned parent ringing about their child, the screener of calls was for the principal from salespeople, the provider of 31 copies of anything… back to back! Immediately! All done with a smile!
The children presented Brid with a handmade card…some saying she was ‘awesome’, and a ‘legend’ and that she would be missed. Mairead Bruen and Susan Kilduff, on behalf of the Parents’ Council, presented her with some jewellery as a token of their appreciation.
Brid Fenlon ended by saying, “Like Brid O’Sullivan would say, “I don’t know about ye lads but”…I will leave the last word to the kids and Abby stood up and spoke for her schoolmates, thanking Brid and wishing her well in her next job. Whoever is fortunate enough to employ Bríd next chapter of her career does not know how lucky he/she is…yet!

On Thursday, 3rd December, the children, parents and staff of Kiltiernan NS
extended their deep appreciation to John Costelloe, local farmer and past
pupil of Kiltiernan School. He was invited to receive a handmade card,
signed by every pupil and member of staff and the gift of a crib for his
generosity in donating a portion of land to facilitate upgrading the water
treatment system of the school.
The principal thanked him for his gesture, on behalf of the staff, Board of
Management, parents and pupils explaining that it would deepen the bond he
already had with the school as a past pupil, parent of four past pupils and
as a great neighbour of the school. Many families relationship with the
school end with the graduation of their youngest child but she added “Once
you’ve been a pupil of this school, you are always welcome back as many
Transition Year and Student Teachers have attested over the years”. However,
John strengthened and made permanent his link with the school through this
gift of land. She explained that for the children the most significant
outcome for them was that their playground could remain intact and they
could still “keep our lovely trees” because of his kindness. The words “You
are so kind!” and “You are awesome!” were repeated by many children who
signed the card.
John expressed his delight at the gratitude shown to him describing himself
as being “bowled over” by the kind words, by the sentiments expressed in the
card made by the pupils and by the gifts. He explained that he was simply
following his father’s example, because 46 years ago he had donated the site
on which the school now stands. He quoted his father saying “Land is only
land.you can’t take it with you” so make some good of it and it will be put
to good use by the school. He advised the children to work hard, to
appreciate their time in school because the memories and friendships made
here will last a lifetime. He also spoke of the importance of volunteerism
and civic spirit in a community and how important it was to thank those who
gave of their energy and time to coaching and on committees and voluntary
work. He expressed his delight at the response of the school and said his
father would have approved of his gift to the school.
Fr. Roche, as Chairperson of the B.O.M. also spoke outlining the needs of
the school and how John had so generously answered them. He gave John a gift
from the parish to express his gratitude.
The children sang some Christmas carols and John, who is also a member of
the Ballinderreen choir joined in.
The true spirit of Christmas was clearly evident to all those who attended
the event.

Welcome back after a Spooktastic Halloween. It was great to see everyone dressed up on the Friday of the holidays and we think there may have been a few strange looks in the car park from the cars passing by. Hope we didn’t scare them too much!
November brings big seasonal change and we have learned all about hibernation and change in trees for SESE this month. It is Anti-Bullying month in school on the 14th-18th of November and we will be practicing to be as good a friend as we can be.
In Maths, we are learning about 2D and 3D shapes so we can point some of these out in the supermarket the next time we shop.
We are working on Construction in Art, and made a Loon Duck as a collage next week. We will be using lots of different textures and materials to construct in Art for the month. In Gaeilge, we are learning about weather so ask whether the la is te, fuar, fliuch or tirim and we’ll let you know!
December will be busy with the Christmas Fare on Sunday the 13th, Carol service in Labane Church on the 16th at 7pm so we will be ready for the holidays by then.
We are of course aware of the fact that Christmas is around the corner and are trying our best to be as good as gold both at home and at school, because we know Santa’s robins are always outside the window ready to report back!
Happy birthday this season to December Dynamos Alex, Gabriel and Corey, and January Jewels Liam, Sarah and Emma.
