1916 Gardening
/in 2nd Class, 3rd Class, 4th Class, 5th Class, 6th Class /by emerbThis year the pupils from 2nd to 6th were weeding and watering the garden. We all split up into groups and covered a patch in the garden. We all had different tools to use for the weeding such as: trowels, hedge clippers and mini pitchforks. Some groups would take the weeds out of the groves on the path. We also found some wildlife like worms and frogs. We were not just working in the centenary garden but all over the school grounds. We were also sweeping leaves of the tarmac and were happy to be doing it for the school. It looked good afterwards and Miss Leech was very happy with our work for the Graduation.
Confirmation 2018
/in 5th Class, 6th Class /by emerbOn the 3rd of May sixth class woke up very excited because it was their Confirmation day. Our ceremony was at 3 o’clock. We had previously completed “You shall be my witness programme”. We also had a ceremony of light mass marking our pledge to abstain alcohol drink till a certain age. The church was packed and we were rehearsed and ready to go. We were with Ballyglass for our ceremony. Our celebrant was Cannon Rabbitte.
Firstly at the start of the mass there was an offertory procession. Then we had the liturgy of the word. Grace and Emma sang the psalm and Melanie sang the alleluia. Then came the renewal of baptismal promises. That is one of the three parts of confirmation. We had to respond with “I do”.
Next we had the laying on of the hand which consists of the cannon laying his hands on us. After that we had the anointing with chrism when your sponsor stands behind you and puts their hand on your shoulder which symbolises your sponsor being there for you.
Next we came to the prayers of the faithful. Sean S, Patrick, Toby, Sean C and David all said a prayer. Finally at the end of the ceremony Adam did a reflection on “What confirmation means to me”. At the end of the ceremony everyone was congratulating us and taking pictures. Later some people went to their houses and some people went out for dinner. Everyone really enjoyed their confirmation 2018
The Bush
/in 5th Class, 6th Class /by emerbThe bush is a bush that some 6th class boys started using to relax and talk in.
The bush started one day when 5 boys (Diarmuid, Patrick, David, Stephen and Toby) went into the bush for a game of 40, 40. Diarmuid started hollowing out the bush and emptying out the briars. We then started to put down the bedding.
After that we had a storm and lots of branches fell down so we picked them up and put them on top so we had cover. We then started spending all our time in the bush and the teachers and all the class came into the bush and amazingly there was still enough room to move around. The ‘Bush gang’ had now extended to 7 people Diarmuid, Patrick, Stephen, David, Toby, Sean Slevin and Adam Cahill.

World Cup 2018
/in 5th Class, 6th Class /by emerbProjects: Edel, Eimear and Grace
The World Cup is a sporting event that is held every four years. 32 football teams from all over the world represent their country in a football tournament. They are divided into groups of four and every team plays the other teams in their group and the top two teams qualify to the next stage.
To celebrate this event the middle and the senior rooms drew out a country and did a project based on that country. The project had to include: Capital, Currency, Map, Language, Population, Tourist attractions, Food, Culture, physical Features, World Cup History and players to watch. For example Edel got Morocco, Eimear got Portugal and Grace got Nigeria.
Our Dream Team for World Cup 2018 is as follows:

Coutinho Iniesta Neymar
Messi Ronaldo
Aguero

/in 6th Class /by emerbOn the 29th of May, around 20 athletes from Kiltiernan National School travelled to Dangan running track in Galway to compete in the schools Athletics Competition for 2018.
We competed in many events including 60m, 400m, 100m, 800m and relay runs. We were to be in Dangan for 08:00 to stretch and to get ready to run. We had pupils from 2nd class up to 6th class competing. We did run offs to decide who went to compete. The 1st 2nd and 3rd placing athletes in the run off went to compete in that event. We did the same run offs for anyone who was interested in being on a relay team and we then put relay teams together. There was one boy’s team one girl’s team from 2nd class up to 6th class. It was a fun day and we came back to school with several medals. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Graduation 2018
/in 5th Class, 6th Class, What's Happening /by emerbOn Thursday the 21st of June, 2018’s sixth-class graduated from our school. We put a lot into the preparation, like choir practice, making memory sheets, and practicing our readings. Each child was given a job that- however small and would contribute greatly to the ceremony, including the opening precession, singing solos, and readings.
We started off with the opening precession, which had eight of the sixth-class students bring up items that acted as symbols of our experiences over the years in Kiltiernan N.S.
Then we read out the Liturgy of the Word. Following that we had the Gospel, the Blessing of the Young People, a parent’s Reflection, a Blessing of the Parents and Guardians, the Statement of young People, and finally the Prayers of the Faithful.
We followed this with the presentation of the Certificates of Attendance and the performance of two songs from the incredibly inspiring musical ‘The Greatest Showman’
Before the ceremony we were told to write letters of thanks to our parents and vice versa. We exchanged them and read them later. Subsequently we were given prayer rocks by Elaine Cunningham.
Afterwards our principal, Miss Leech, gave her address, We received had our special Kiltiernan blessing and we finished with our symbolic balloon release on a beautiful summers’ evening.

Sports day and ice Cream day 2018
/in 1st Class, 2nd Class, 3rd Class, 4th Class, 5th Class, 6th Class, Junior Infants, Senior Infants /by emerbOn Friday, 22/6/2018 sports day and ice-cream day was held in Kiltiernan N.S. We were instructed to bring in a sack, spoon and potato, tights and hurls if you wanted to participate in púc fáda. All children from Sunflower Montessori to 6th class pupils in Kiltiernan participated in a eventful sports day.
We started off the day with a eager 60m sprints from the junior infants to sixth class. As soon as Ms.Leech blew the whistle we saw the hopeful looks on all girls and boys faces as they sprinted for the finish line! After that we had some fun races including sackrace , egg and spoon race (but yet we used potatoes) , three legged races, wheel barrow races and also piggy back races.
After a few races we had a little break and we were told that you could get our two euro for the fundraiser for down syndrome Ireland, so when we got our two euro we all went to get ice-cream in the hall . It was a really nice award from all those races we ran and we raised one hundred and 85 euro for Down Syndrome Ireland!
Without delay the break flew by and we were back in action. Tug of war took place then and lots of students took part. We started with the lower classes and reached are way up to the older classes as the rivalry grew. Shortly afterwards we stared up relay races. All ages could take part. We had an over dose of fun. Suddenly it was 2:00pm and children started to go home early. There was only an hour left of school and 10 pupils left. We began a round of Púc Fada. After Púc Fada we played hurling and lots of soccer.
Unfortunately Sports day had to come to an end and we went home wondering would are school tour be as exciting as today sports day!
County Hurling Champions 2018
/in 4th Class, 5th Class, 6th Class, What's Happening /by emerbOn the 14th June the Kiltiernan hurlers had a county final in Loughgeorge, Claregalway. The team was all set when we left the school at nine thirty. The match started at eleven o’ clock. We had plenty of supporters from 2nd to 6th to cheer us on. Laurencetown NS were our opponents for the match. We changed and started our warm up to prepare for the game. When eleven o’ clock came we were ready to try our best.
The referee threw the ball in and the game was underway. At the start we both exchanged 2 points each and the game was beginning to really be a great game of hurling. But then, Sean picked out Stephen with a great pass who rounded his man and scored an amazing goal. It was 1-3 to 0-2 to Kiltiernan at half time.
When the second half came round we knew the opposition would come out hard. We started quickly and scored another thanks to Stephen to bring his tally to 2-4. We kept going as a team and everyone on the panel put in great effort to help win this game. We kept going and scored another goal and a point from Stephen. When the final whistle blew we started to celebrate to our victory.
We went over and lifted the trophy and took some pictures and enjoyed every bit of it. After, we went to Supermacs and thanks to the school for that. We would also like to thank Ms O’ Doherty and Barry Duffy for coaching us a helping us. It was a great day for Kiltiernan NS.
