Friendship Week June 15th – 21st

Friendship Week June 15th – 21st

I thought it would be hard to work with two girls and I’m not saying it was easy but this is what we finally did…

For Friendship Week I was partnered with Erin Conolly and Clodagh. We had to begin our teamwork by agreeing on a team name and a project. We called ourselves “Unicorn Ryders” because we all love unicorns and riding. We drew a big unicorn with us riding it. It was called Fluff-Puff. We all helped to get the drawing done. We also built a paper airplane with the whole of the Senior Room and Middle Room signed it.

The unicorn was hard and took a lot of effort. The airplane was quick to make but was hard to find everyone and make sure they all signed. At the end of the week we had an exhibition of all our work. Everyone, including all our teachers saw it. We had to explain how we thought of our ideas, the skills of co-operation, communication, compromise and creativity. The most difficult skill for us if we had to pick one was co-operation but we were very happy as a group and we think we did a great job.

We loved Friendship Week and were sad that it is over. Thank you for coming to see our work!

School Tour

School Tour

Yesterday on the 23rd of June we went on our school tour to UL Activity Centre in Killaloe, County Clare/Tipperary. The journey was long but worth it. When we arrived we were so excited!

We got our own marquee to change, eat and store our supplies.

We brought our

  • Lunch
  • Togs
  • And a change of clothes for after the wet activities

First we had a little snack and then it was off to the High Ropes

We climbed really high!

Next it was Archery and an Adventure Trail

Adventure Trail: The Adventure Trail was more of a ‘trust walk’. We had to balance on a small wire from one tree to another tree. Our friends stood by us on the side to catch us if they fall

Archery: The archery game was so fun. We had 2 shots at the target board which was small but surprisingly easy to hit. It was so fun!

Mmmm Lunch!

Lunch was next we had our big lunch now but now to big because after it was water activities!

The water activities were

  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Sailing
  • Paddle boarding
  • Pier Jumping

They were so fun!

Our highlights were;

Eimear: My favourite activities were Canoeing, Kayaking, Paddle boarding

Paul: My favourite part was the High Ropes and I climbed so high!

Seán: My favourite part was Pier Jumping and Kayaking

On the way back we stopped at Apple Green. We got to go to Burger King and Subway. We bought tons of sweets too! There was an indoor playground and it was so fun and cool! We all felt 5 again!

Then it was another hour home on the bus but it was all worth it for our best tour ever!

Yawn…

Zzzzzzzzzz!

Friendship Week

Friendship Week

Friendship week was the 15th of June to the 21st of June.

In the Middle Room we did a Friendship Week project. We all agreed that our name would be the circle of Friends and our topic would be something in art. The next day we all came in with all the things we needed;

Sadhbh brought in her toys so that we could put them on the project board. Emma brought in a project board to put all our work on.

Adam brought in his rosary beads and a little holy cross.

Then we made a big circle and coloured it in with pastels with all our favourite places, artwork and drawings. Then we wrote a poem! The next day we typed up our poem and Emma brought in a treehouse that we had made into a friendship treehouse and we made an extension to it.

Sadhbh brought in a school that was made of paper, cereal box and tissue paper which we called the Friendship N.S. The next day we invited the Junior and Senior Rooms to the halla to see our projects, We talked about all the things we did to make our project come together.

We co-operated by asking what each other’s ideas were.

We communicated by talking about what we all could have in the project.

We compromised by making sure that everyone had a part of the project and we all agreed on every decision.

We were creative by mixing each other’s ideas together and in writing poetry and drawing.

Friendship Week in the Middle Room

Friendship Week in the Middle Room

On the 15th to the 21st of June it was Friendship Week in Kiltiernan NS.  In the Middle Room we were divided into groups of three in a raffle and each group did a Friendship Project. We were divided into groups of 3. Our group was made up of Toby, Stephen and Katie. Ms. Fenlon explained

“If you can do these skills

  • Co- Operation,
  • Communication,
  • Compromise and
  • Creativity

you will have a successful project at the end of the week”.

Each group had to pick a topic to work or build on.  We chose Lego as our  topic. Afterwards we sat down to decide what we would build out of Lego. We all agreed on a Friendship Town. The next day we brought in Lego to start our project. Katie brought in a Café. Toby and Stephen brought lots of Lego blocks in. Stephen started working on a clothes shop. Katie and Toby worked on a park. It took 20 minutes for our second building to be finished. We all agreed it was a fine looking clothes shop! When the first session of building was over we were nearly half way there.

The next day Stephen brought more Lego. Katie brought a few cars. Toby brought a lunch box worth of Lego. Soon after the next allocated time of the project started we were doing finishing touches to the park. We started a house which turned into a toy store and we put a small cat and train in the shop. So far we were ahead of schedule. But we still had a lot of work to do.

Finally it was the last day of building for the project! The next day we would be showing the project off to the whole school! We still had a little bit to go. Toby brought a remote control train in for our project. Now we were finished our project. The next day was the big day. We were going to show it off.

First was the Junior Room. They all loved the train. We got very nice comments about it. Now it was the Senior Room. But straight away there was a bad start. Ava in 4th Class accidentally drove the train off the table! Not good… Still overall the project was a great success. Also we all got a sneaky look and the other people’s project. Overall Friendship Week was really fun and very worthwhile.

The hardest skill for our group was compromise because we all had so many ideas and we just couldn’t use them all. It’s a great way to learn about what is really important!

Report on Being a Play Monitor

Report on Being a Play Monitor

Middle Room

On Wednesday 2nd Class pupils Liam and Andrew were play monitors. A play monitor is available to help Junior and Senior Infants play, make friends and never feel left out or lonely. Our teacher gave us some training and a book to make up new games…

Well the first game Andrew and Liam played with the Infants was Poison and Catch. The Juniors who played were Eoghan, Marlon, Matthew and Emily. The second game we played was ‘What Time Is It Mister Wolf?’ Liam was on. Then we all played Hide And Seek. Andrew was on! The first person he found was Eoghan, then Liam. Then we played Stuck in the Mud. Liam was on! The first   child Liam caught was Marlon, then Matthew was on. Then we played Poison. In Poison the chaser holds out his hands, each player holds a finger. The chaser says I went to the shop and I bought a bottle of …(Say anything sold in a bottle e.g. lemonade, cola, orange, juice, vinegar) and if the catcher says “Poison!”  all the players run. If the chaser catches that player is ‘it’. The next game we played was Frog In The Middle. In Frog In The Middle one player is the frog. The frog sits on the floor he can’t stand up. The players stand in a circle around the frog. They touch him and probe him. They shout “Frog In The Middle you can’t catch me!” The frog tries to touch someone. If he touches someone they are the frog. The game goes on.

We enjoyed being play monitors because we had fun with the Juniors. We felt confident being asked to be in charge and it made us feel important. The Juniors felt cheerful and excited playing with older boys. Normally we would play with our friends and we would not play with Juniors. It was nice to get to know them better. We look forward to seeing them in September!

Galway County Schools Sports 2015

Schools’ County Sports Day

May 26th 2015

On Tuesday the 26th of May some students from 1st to 6th class travelled to Dangan to participate in in a schools athletics competition. We initially ran off an internal event in our school to pick the pupils who would represent Kiltiernan.

It was an early start for competitors as we had to leave our homes at 8:00 am to be in Dangan for 9:30 Am. We arrived early so that gave us time to run a lap around the track and warm up. Once the races had begun time flew and before you knew we were ready for the semi-finals. Orla, Grace, Tara, Abbie, Stephen and David had all made it to the Semi Finals. The boys’ relay made it straight into the final. After some very competitive semi- finals Abbie and Stephen qualified for their respective finals. Stephens’s race was on first. He was partaking in the under 11 boys’ 400 metre race. Thankfully he ran a great race and finished 2nd picking up a silver medal- our first of the day. Next Abbie ran in the girls’ 100m sprint. After a tight race she finished an honourable 4th.  The last race of the day saw the boys’ relay team finish a fantastic fifth. Overall it was a fantastic day and we are already looking forward to next year’s competition.

First Confession

First Confession

At the moment in Second Class we are preparing for our First Confession. We go to the church which is the House of God where we get forgiven by God through the words and the actions of the priest.

While the priest is forgiving our sins we will sing hymns and say some prayers. The prayers are The Act of Sorrow, Prayer for Forgiveness and The Prayer After Forgiveness. the hymns we will sing include ‘Connected’, ‘I’m Sorry’ and ‘My Shepherd is the Lord’. Our favourite hymn is ‘The Lost Sheep’ because we get to sing “Baa! Baa! Baa!”

We have had a rehearsal and look forward to our first confession with Fr. Joe and Fr. David on Thursday 30th April. Our parents will come with us to the altar but we will go to the priest, by ourselves, like an adult! I think we will feel happy, relieved and wonderful…all sparkly white with forgiveness.
